Counting by Flint Park

July 21st, 2006 9:41 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Count or measure something that has never been counted or measured before. How many CDs can you label with one sharpie? How long does it take for all the ketchup to run out of the bottle? How many times does a trafic light change in an hour? How many licks does it taket to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

What do you wonder about? Find out and let us know.

I decided for this task to count things on a typical work day for me.

Heres the stats I ended up with
8 hours and 30 minutes worked
14 bathroom cleanings (7 for each men and womens)
9 spill stations to check
8 garbage cans to change
49 toilet cleanings
63 sink cleanings
9 waste baskets to change
6 garbage cans to change
14 urinal cleanings
15 questions asked to me
5 questions I could answer
10 questions I couldnt answer
3 trips back and fourth from guest serivce to stocking
2 clothes hanger bin emptying runs
and one tired flint.

How may times did you use the bathroom? Are you more respectful of public bathrooms given your job?

I used the bathroom once that day

Before this job I was one of the rude people who did not take into consideration those who cleanup restrooms. So in that sense this job has forever changed me in the sense that I respect what janitors have to do.

Hmmm... perhaps people should have to clean a public restroom once before they are allowed to use public restrooms. Maybe they would have a little more respect for the restroom and for the people who clean them.

It reminds me of a spoken word poet named, "Techno Pagan Octopus Messiah" who has a great piece about having to get an eating license before eating certain foods... mainly meats... one should have to slaughter the animal with one's own (bare) hands or at least witness how they are killed before one is allowed to buy them from a store or restaurant. The commonality here is that knowing what's involved gives us a respect for things we often take for granted. I don't know what happened to this guy, but check out his book if you have the means.
