Work is So Strange by John M

I try my best to get a normal amount of sleep. I work swingshift and sleep a good 8 hours a day. Last week I was pushed onto dayshift for training purposes.
I shifted my sleep schedule, went to bed early. Everything according to plan. What happened next is a mystery. Sitting there, in class, I'd be fine... not tired... plenty of free coffee and donuts... sugar/caffeine high. So why? Why is that every time my instructor opens his mouth I instantly fall asleep!?
I get the first three words he says echoing through my subconscious and then its all dreamland. I've found a direct line to REM sleep but I have to be in a room filled with mechanics in an uncomfortable chair to do it. GUH!
It's kind of embarrassing when the teacher asks me a question knowing full well I'd been asleep the whole time. I guess it could be worse... it could happen when I've got my hands in an engine...
