Leave Clues by Flea

March 18th, 2008 4:04 PM / Location: 54.997976,-6.330871

INSTRUCTIONS: Leave clues.

So it's coming up to Easter, and Easter Egg hunts are now commonplace.

I decided to make my own...

The Set-Up

I printed off a note to describe what would happen later on that night...
The Letter
...and placed it inside a public telephone.
The Phone

Now, to leave some clues nearby to entice people into examining the phone...

The clues are fairly obvious, but we're not technically started yet, are we?

I also placed some calls to the payphone where the note was. When I finally got an answer, I aksed the person at the other end if they received my note...

"Yes."
"See you at nine then."
*BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP*

The Game

At 9:00pm, I phoned up the payphone, and someone answered almost immediately. I told them that they had 60 minutes to find the eggs before I took them for myself. I then told him that his first task was to phone me.

"What's your number?"

He had to find it for himself. I told him it was in or near the Park, and then told him to run, before hanging up.

The next clue was on the wall opposite the park.
The Wall
"Other side".

And on the other side of that wall...
My number
...my phone number.

This was as far as they seemed to get. I never received a call, which was a shame. But, here's what would have happened...

The person would have phoned me up, at which point I would have said:
"Good work. You will find further instructions under the bridge, if you dig a little deeper."
My note.
18:00 C4 relates to 6pm on Channel 4, the airing time and TV channel that The Simpsons is broadcast on every weekday.
The Note...
I placed the clue in a waterproof bag so it wouldn't be damaged.

I went under the bridge...
My Clue
...and buried my clue under some dirt and rocks.

The clue itself refers to a building which has been boarded up. The boards have been painted over with pictures of The Simpsons. You may recognise this building from Night Photography as "the building beside the bank".

I left some clues in there too...

A distracting question mark...

Some more arrows, leading through a door and up the stairs...

...and it's over! The prize for anyone who made it...

A bag of Mini Creme Eggs!

No-one won though, so they're mine now!

I leave a calling card and a sympathy egg at the payphone though, else it's just mean..!

So overall, today I managed to talk to some strangers over the phone, and eat some Mini Creme Eggs.

That's a good day methings...

Someone actually bothered to participate. I'm impressed. Also like the clues and how nicely layed out it all was. Well done.

Anyone else reminded of cake?

Excellent completion.

Do you mean the band, or George the Animal Steele?

Nice job with the use of the pay phone to get people involved! My Leave Clues didn't go so well. The first clue was taken, but I think it was taken by a loser who didn't want to play, since they have not progressed to clue #2.

Seems a tad too difficult for a one-person search, and I'm not sure food is the reward I want to find at the end of a scavenger hunt put on by a stranger... but nevertheless, I'm impressed. Vote for you.

I agree, which was a secondary reason for the "you probably won't want to be alone" line in the letter...

You have a point!
