MN0PQ2: Spies Like Us by space bug, star5, Oliver X, S 4, Celina

September 16th, 2008 5:17 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Participate in the running or playing of MN0PQ2. Write up your experience.

we are the organizers of mn0pq2, along with bitwise (not on sf0 yet?). this one was spy themed!

the story goes.. dr. kaiju has created mutagen bombs which will create a giant army of monsters which will destroy the city if the agents aren't able to diffuse the bombs. he has setup a series of puzzles for the MN0 agents to try to solve which will help teams figure out how to diffuse the bombs.

the opening game was a mcgyver challenge. each team was given a set of supplies such as: a mint tin, a pencil, a rubberband (except one team that didn't get that), a balloon, a sticker, a tack, a clothespin.. etc. they had to create a device to launch a scrabble tile the furthest. they could only use one finger to launch.. and their arm could not be the launching mechanism. there were many creative solutions. the furthest got maybe 15 to 20 feet? the first team got a little extra bribe money and started first.

we gave each team a code book and money to buy hints.

then we made them run around and solve 9 puzzles do one physical challenge.

the physical challenge was star5's idea. it was to sneak through a "laser" grid made of neon string, lit by blacklight, to get a puzzle. the strings had bells on them so you knew if they were tripped. teams entered through an alley into a back of a store, led down into a dark basement. one team member had to go in and get through the grid to get the puzzle. but if they tripped the wires, they had to bribe a guard. people got really excited about this one. it was perhaps a little tougher than it should have been.. but one person (gwen!) did get through.

they way people got directions to the next puzzle was to call a phone number (which was obtained in the first puzzle). they gave the codeword (which was the answer to the puzzle they just solved), and i gave them a grid location on the map.

the puzzles were mostly made up by oliver x & bitwise, with testing and input by the rest of the group.

one of the favorite puzzles was probably # 5.

it involved solving the puzzle on the page which told you to spill grape juice on your paper to reveal the codeword. people got really excited when they saw this in action.

other puzzles included a letter puzzle, a book puzzle, a twister puzzle, an audio puzzle, etc.

the final puzzle was a meta puzzle which required you to cut a wire to diffuse a bomb. this allowed all teams to at least attempt the final puzzle, even teams who didn't get through all the previous puzzles. but the answers from the previous puzzles helped you solve this one.. so you certainly had an advantage by having all the answers.

the team who diffused the bomb correctly and had the most money left was the winner.

many teams did diffuse the bomb.. but the team that diffused the bomb and had the most money was:

(including our very own inktea)

it was a good game. people really had fun. they liked the spy theme. we haven't put all the puzzles and hints online.. if anyone really wants to try the ones up here and needs hints, let me know! a few didn't get up there because they were more physical.

That is pretty funny. You kinda look drunk. And what kind of spy are you? I'm guessing some sort of CIA operative from the frontiers of Afghanistan or some such? Either way, it's hilarious.
