Remove A Task: The Task by star5

July 21st, 2006 12:02 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: The mechanics of SF0 depend sensitively on the distribution of tasks and points. Too many easy tasks and high level players will neglect the hard tasks. Too few, and players will be unable to reach the difficult tasks.

Help restore balance to the game by nominating a task for retirement. Your nomination should review all completions of the task, including highlights and low points, and assess what we collectively can learn from this task.

I nominate the task Celebrity Doppleganger for removal.
222 people have completed this task (with 2 more currently doing it). I myself completed this task long ago.

A quick review of some of the completions of this task, shows us that players have been compared to actors, musicians, terrorists, and even Anne Frank, which often look nothing like the player. In some cases no match is found. The celebrity doppleganger is clearly not all that accurate. My personal favorite, though I can't claim to have looked at every entry, is Spotlight Skullshines. His two attempts brought up a Bollywood actor and actress who have appeared in the same films and his write-up of this is quite amusing.

Probably because it's a simple task which can be completed in front of the computer without requiring much work of the player, it is often one of the first tasks completed. While I believe it is good to have some simpler tasks for new players to work on, I think this particular task is perhaps too lacking. It can be a source of a bit of amusement, but after looking at a few, it quickly becomes old. It requires no creativity, no community, no thought, no exploration of mind and the world. I myself skip over this task when it appears in the list of completed tasks, because the small bit of amusement i found in it at first is long gone. Now it is just taking up space.

I think Celebrity Doppleganger could be retired now that there are a fair number of low level tasks that are simple enough to complete, yet require a bit more from the player and offer more back to the community.

While I'm not entirely convinced that this task should be retired, I'm in agreement that the proofs of the task are no longer terribly intersting to me. However, to newish players, I still think that it brings some small amount of whimsy and easy accesiblity to the early tasks. On the other hand, it does play of the culture of celebrity and the idea of famous/important, not-famous/not-important that probablt has little or no place in the game.

I'm nominally in favor of keeping it because it's still amusing to do for the first time, and seems to be the perennial second task of any new player. I like that there are several low hanging fruit when a player starts that begins the push to more ambitious tasks.

I do think some intersting twists could/should be added; Myheritage seems to have a limited number of pictures for each celebrity. What happens if you submit a very odd photo of a celebrity? Will it find a match with the same person, or will it yield completely different results?

Myheritage also seems to match the facial expression and cranial accesories of a photo more than the actual facial structure. I've seen that when the Player and the Doppleganger look nothing alike, the tilt of the head and the facial expressions match perfectly. It would be interesting to pick a celebrity photo that looks nothing like the player, and take a picture in the exact pose in an attempt to get a specific match...

I'm with Star5. This task made me install a new browser, but aside of that, it was no work whatsoever, and lots of people who don't get a match right away don't submit another photo, just say that they had no match and still get the points.

There are lots of easy, low-level tasks that one could partake in that do either engage some creativity, engage the community, or some sort of mental engagement. I second the nomination.

I also skip reading Celebrity Doppleganger when I see it in the finished tasks list.

I agree that this task is very easy and doesn't add much to the game, but I don't think it should be retired. I think you need some intentional gimmes like this one to get people to engage with the game. It gets you some points and provides an easy first interaction to learn to use the site.

I think it would be greatly improved by having some followup tasks like, contact your celebrity doppleganger, or something.

I'm with Britt in that this task is an easy "tutorial" for submitting a task to sf0 and that there's really no harm in having this sort of thing around. Additionally, the task is almost always going to be "amusing" at the very least for the person submitting their photo...

MyHeritage's software has nothing to do with the task. At no point was "Celebrity Doppleganger" expected to give the player any "useful" information...it's just an absurd little diversion to break the ice.

Maybe an addition

Take it away!!
There are a ton of easy low-level tasks that people can do now. I understand when a lot of players started that it was harder to get up to the higher levels and more exciting tasks, but that is no longer the case and this task is nothing that we are about. Tasks like this are one of the reasons I think that players get confused about the level of thought and effort that can go into tasks and also implies that we are playing for points when we throw in such easy no work tasks. Masquerade is an easy low-level task that takes just a little effort and creativity
Like Inky I never read the celebrity doppleganger proof.
Like Cameron Suey I agree that the celebrity aspect has nothing to do with who we are and why we are playing.
Unlike Orion and Britt I actually think it harms the fabulousness of the game, and since there are sooo many low-level tasks now this one should go buh-bye.
