Dérive by ezra goldman

July 15th, 2006 11:28 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Among the various situationist methods is the dérive [literally: 'drifting'], a technique of transient passage through varied ambiances. In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

One can dérive alone, but all indications are that the most fruitful numerical arrangement consists of several small groups of two or three people who have reached the same awakening of consciousness, since the cross-checking of these different groups' impressions makes it possible to arrive at objective conclusions.

Undertake a dérive, and report your objective conclusions to your fellow players.

i've done a million of these. i even started a derive group when i was in portland, or.

sample derives i've done:
*algorithmic (multiple)
*pretend to be a tour guide for a city you don't know, superimposing map(s) of foreign cities (done once with 5 people doing 5 places simultaneously)
*using dice/coins to decide on which turn to make (multiple)
*"traditional"

next on the docket: i have a set of cards picked up from a glowlab exhibit at art interactive in cambridge,ma that are set up for a derive. each with instructions. probably best for an open space since a number are "go 12 steps" or something that make them challenging (though not impossible) for urban use.

i also have some cards from an uncle wiggly board game (leg hurts from rheumatism, go back one, etc.). been meaning to do those next. these are back in boston though.

*always* up for a derive. contact me if you want to have an outing...

Awesome, I'm excited to see some of your documentation and I'm even more excited about trying some of these derive ideas out for myself.

Still, how about doing another one for sf0 and posting some pictures?

that's great you've got so many ideas and experience.. but this doesn't really fulfill the task. it says to undertake a derive, and report your conclusions.

i'd love to see something actually done and documented for sf0.
