Graveyard Venture by Cunning Linguist, mock piratey turtle

June 10th, 2006 11:06 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In a small group, sneak into a graveyard or cemetery at night. The larger the better. Be there at midnight. Document interesting headstones, explore a Mausoleum, if possible. Meet ghosts, maybe? Find the final resting place of someone famous during this visit.

Currently, there are only two cemeteries and one crematorium inside SF city limits. One cemetery is located at the Mission Dolores Church at 16'th and Dolores Streets. The other is The San Francisco National Cemetery, at the Old Presidio Army Base, which is now part of the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is legally a seperate entity from San Francisco proper, but, from the earliest days it has always been considered a real part of the city.

San Francisco National Cemetery is a much larger cemetery and (as per task description) larger is better; roughly about the size of 8-10 football fields. Sufficient space to explore.

We tried to find an alternate entrance into the cemetery, since we weren't expecting a welcoming committee at the front gates.

To no surprise, we found that the cemetery did indeed have operating hours.

We tried to take a few pics and soon found out that despite the full moon and a small flashlight, pictures without flash weren't going to fully convey what we were seeing (we thought flash might attract unnecessary attention from the FEDERAL park police).

We started playing around w/ the camera's exposure time and lense aperture settings, and found it to be a better method of capturing what we wanted to convey.

When increasing exposure time, the camera usually requires a bit of stabilization, so when we set it down to take the following picture, we caught something... ethereal.

The following pics give a better idea of what we were seeing... i particularly like the one w/ the golden gate bridge in the background and only wish we also could've capture more of the tombstones in that shot.

And as for someone famous... Dr. Robert C. Atkins, creator of the Atkins diet. Maybe.

The following movie details the journey a bit as well...
