Aaron Burr by Cunning Linguist
June 21st, 2006 10:13 PMUnlike many San Franciscans, I spend no money on public transportation on a daily basis (since I bike to work), and I love to cook so I don't eat out very often (though I like not having to do dishes... and eat food that I'm too unskilled to prepare...). So I knew that on the third day of this financial fast, I would just splurge... splurge on delicious things...
Monday, June 19th: Spent $0
Tuesday, June 20th: Spent $0
Wednesday, June 21st: Spent $10
I work near the lower haight in SF and when I don't prepare lunch (and can afford it), I head with some co-workers out to some of the local eateries... my favorite is Ali Baba's Cave on Haight near Fillmore. If you like semi-americanized mediterranean food, this place is it (homemade hummus too!)

The victim... Mr. Hamilton himself.

The chicken shawarma sandwhich on lavash bread cost $5.99, with tax it came out to $6.50.

My fellow coworkers and I headed to a local park on Duboce and Noe to sit in the warm sun and bask in the glory of our Shawarma and Falafels (for the veggies).

After work, I felt like I needed to indulge in some desert, so I went to the local liquor store and picked up some of my favorite chocolate (I'm a fan of the super dark, high cocoa variety which has been linked to good cardiovascular health) and some mints for afterwards. This came out to $3.25, which left me w/ $.25

On the way home, I knew that I had to spend the entire $10, so I wasn't sure what to do w/ the last $.25. Then I walked by an expired meter. It was close to 6pm (which is when meters stop running in many streets), but it wasn't quite 6pm, so I figured for all the indulgent spending I had done today, I could at least spend those last $.25 on someone else. I fed the meter, but the fucking thing swallowed my quarter. I was slightly upset, so then I went and had some chocolate and then felt better =].

Ali's is ok, but I much prefer Love and Haight.
I've had the same thing happen to me, did a poor man's hack to correct the problem without bothering any of the SF0 engineers. I'd help you out to, but you are getting kind of high on the ranking.
More importantly, this is all in my back yard.
- Linguist, how could you skip $2/slice Mythic?
- Oliver, Love and Haight? Really? I wanted to love that place, gave it three chances within my first two weeks here, and it just never stuck.
- The hardline question: how much did the ingredients for those other two days of eatin' cost? Or do we get into pro-rating rent and utilities at that point?
- If that chocolate wasn't from "Key Food Market", it probably should've been.
...of anti-consumerism here at SF0. I think it's important to keep that thing up to date, but if the task requires you to use money... is that the same thing? it seems to be a different animal than just spending money to get a task done... its learning a lesson by managing your spendings... am i wrong? Someone holler back on this one.
How do you get places, if you don't spend money on transport? (Curiosity)
re: Love and Haight: excellent vegan options, consistently good, open nice and late.
The sushi place a few doors down with the big red fish in the window is decent too, with about half a dozen different vegan rolls, and usually open until 10. Raja on the corner, also pretty decent, open until 11.
As for Mythic, most Minneapolitans will agree that there's no adequate pizza in your town, vegan or otherwise.
re: anti-consumerism: I don't think you need to count the $10 unless it's more than you normally would have spent. I think living off what's in your cupboard for this task is perfectly acceptable, provided you didn't purposely go shopping the day before.
(he wrote that he rides his bike, Inky- you should appreciate that!)
I like the emotion implied in just the gesture of the hand on the last photo.
And, yeah, I was amazed at the lack of vegan friendly pizza in SF. What do all the vegan stoners do when there's no appropriate equivalent to Luce or Galactic or Punch or Spokes?

They go to Berkeley.
I'm doing that whole knee slap motion right now.
I totally spend money on transportation... I just don't do it on a "daily" basis. I do have a car, and do use public transit since parking sucks out here... and sometimes I do drive to work (when it rains and I don't want to get drenched)... but on a daily basis, the norm is my bike... I love my bike...
And as far as eateries go... Ollie, not sure when you were last out here, but Raja has SIGNIFICANTLY declined in quality... and with Indian Oven just a few doors away from Raja (more or less across the street), how could you even point out Raja? Indian Oven has often been referred to as the best indian place in SF.
And as far as pizza goes, I agree that for as many eateries that we have, we have very very few... but there are some. If you haven't been, Little Star pizzeria, just a few blocks north on Divis has amazing Chicago deep dish... they use all natural, organic ingredients with a cornmeal crust (that may or may not use butter, not sure). I think Zachary's is better, but most locals would disagree.
I like the pizza at Deja Vu on 16th and Guerrero. It's a big slice for $3 and they make each one fresh individually. Good value.

am neither a vegan, nor a stoner. and i go/went to berkeley... but i suppose we do have more than our fair share.
and as long as we are dishing on pizza (ha!), i just want to put a good word in for the Cheese Board, in the Gourmet Ghetto. possibly the best pizza i've ever had. sweet jeebus that is some tasty pizza. (although, no vegan options, sorry suckas!) unfortunatley, they are only open for about 23 minutes every third tuesday, at which point 7,500 people manifest instantaneously to gobble up all the tasty pizza. (or so it seems...)
This page has some errors on it, and will be fixed soon (I hope). Some of my html in there actually killed the update button on the Edit Description Text link).
