This is a small section of an enormous public art installation throughout the city of Seattle. The artist and date of the work are unknown. All of the pieces in this work are displayed in urban areas.
In this work, the artist shows us the ways in which society seeks to provide safety to the masses. But in providing safety, society limits freedom: no parking, speed limit, etc. This work forces the observer to contemplate the trade offs present: more safety at the cost of less freedom. In this way, this work is a symbol for the United States' struggle against terrorism: a loss of freedom on the part of US citizens for the sake of greater safety for the masses. But the artist's work leaves us to wonder at what point have we sacrificed too much freedom? How much safety is really necessary? The incredible volume of pieces in this work (parking signs on nearly every corner of every street in Seattle) show the artist's true feelings: there is too much restriction and not enough freedom.
The colors chosen for this piece are also symbolic. The reds and whites are obviously patriotic, once again referencing the US's struggle for freedom for all against the oppressive hand of terrorism. The greens of the 1 hour parking limit sign symbolize Islam, and the limits Islamic fundamentalism imposes on capitalism.
