The Callouses on Your Hands by twofivefour

Think of a physical mark on yourself, and invent a story story behind it. Tell the story.

Please, don't tell us which of these options you select.

I have this sneaking suspicion that in my early days, I was cursed by a gypsy. Or crone. Or maybe just a mean-spirited old lady with no powers who got lucky that day. Nevertheless, I feel I was cursed. Because my fingers are constantly getting injured.

This isn't just getting papercuts every now and then. This is repeated trauma, quite often in new and interesting manners.

Like the patch of skin on my left index finger that has been sliced off twice, in the exact same circumstances - while cutting up vinyl, using a guide to protect my fingers.

Or the scars on my right index and little fingers, after a perfectly normal drinking glass decided to implode while in my grasp. It was free of cracks and weak spots, held no liquid, and had been comfortably in my hand for at least half a minute before deciding that structural failure was its best option.

However, the 'best' injury I have received regarding my fingers has to be the slightly misshapen fingernail on my right middle finger. During a rather unfortunate trip to Hawaii, I ended up in an altercation with the rental car. We had a difference of opinion - I believed that when I closed the door after getting out, I should have my fingers outside the vehicle, whereas the car would prefer me to keep my fingers inside. There was a scuffle, and I came off second-best.
I lost the nail around 3 months later, and once it grew back, it was a shadow of its former self.

I'm just thankful I haven't injured myself with a kitchen knife. Yet.

Right little finger

Right little finger

Right little finger, which sports a smart little semi-circle scar.

Right index finger

Right index finger

Right index finger, with what has to be my most visible scar. I had to pull a glass shard out of there. It wasn't fun.

Right middle finger

Right middle finger

Right middle finger. The face of the nail is flat in the middle, rather than curved. A lasting reminder of Hawaii, and that damned rental car.

Right middle finger

Right middle finger

Right middle finger, trying to display the lasting marks. There is a dip in the nail line that will not grow out, along with some lasting white and red streaks - right where the light is reflecting. These have not grown out after 6 years.
