I have been working on small books lately, making them and filling them with stuff. This started a long time ago when Jill, my wife gave me a blank book and said "Fill it with art for me." I did. To make this a shorter story I have been working on a poem and having Jill edit it and help contribute as she is a vastly better writer of all kinds than I. Using the google translation function I took the text and translated it from English to German to French, back to English without editing it in order to get it into their Arabic and then back into English. This was all a way of vaguely following the same path that the US took in searching for allies (or not) prior to the current Middle East war this government is waging. The poem was not orginally about that specifically as i am not an owtwardly political sort, although I was pondering that situation after reading the book that inspired this pretentious little poetic jag. But reading the results made me laugh at the way the language changed. Here is the original text and the resulting translation.
Deianeira’s messenger succeeds
Warning heeded, our hero’s shirt
Bursts not into flame,
Not torn clinging to flesh from body
Crumbles into love
Our hero walks
Naked to the surf
Shirt neatly folded dropped to the sand
For the harmless tide to seize
Do not care Dianiras considered the following information, The shirt of Hildes effects in the flame zerbr öckelt uphold meat Gizerisen body violently in love and ethics champion plates interruption lines of a good results were sand, so inoffensive tide seize
The interesting thing to me is when I entered the original text some words get translated into german as zerbröckelt and i think originally gezerrissene but will not translate back into an English equivalents. Any German speakers that can help?
