Six (or more) Degrees of Kevin Bacon's rock band by whatis 42

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose two highly contrasting bands/musicians/composers. Go to allmusic.com, and start on the page of the first - explore "similar artists" until you reach the second. To prove your achievment, list all artists in the chain from the first to the second.

I started out with hardcore death metal band Suffocation. My goal? Tori Amos.

Here's the path I took:

Suffocation
Broken Hope
Candlemass
Queensrÿche
Metallica
Soundgarden
Jane's Addiction
Smashing Pumpkins
Garbage
Poe
Tori Amos

I floundered a bit at the beginning because I don't know enough about bands of the metal variety, but once I reached Metallica and then Soundgarden my path became more clear.

The interesting part for me was just how difficult it was to make the leap from male artists to female artists. Are music genres and styles really that sex-segregated, or are they just listed that way on this website? Once I got to Garbage is was incredibly easy to get to Tori Amos, but it took me several tries and several deadends* to get form Soundgarden to Garbage. After I noticed this I went through several other paths to see if my first impression was correct, and it was: It was easy to get to Tori Amos from most of the female artists I looked through, but it was more complicated and more difficult to get there from any male group/artist.

Perhaps this reflects my own taste in music, or perhaps it's due to the criteria used for determining which artists are "similar." I'm not sure why the similar artists seem to be somewhat sex-segregated, but it's an interesting discovery nonetheless.

*When I say "deadend" I mean going through a series of musicians that seem to start taking me further from my goal.
