I wasn't going to vote for this, because I was logistics support. But I didn't know anything about the letter. That was moving.
Fascinating. I too have added Harper's Ferry to the list of places to see before I die. The last picture alone (of the shed being enveloped by the woods) would have earned my vote.
I think the fact that your letters (well, the one you posted as a sample anyway) sounds like it's from a kid would tend to militate against people being paranoid about a scam. I think this was brilliantly done.
