Collaborative Audio Collage by S 4, Jesse Morris, star5, Oliver X, Celina, Ink Tea, Danger D. HotBod, space bug, Burn Unit

June 18th, 2006 7:05 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Gather a group, and establish an order. The first player creates/finds/modifies a sound of any length from any single source (field recording, studio recording, synthesis, public domain audio), posts it, and passes it on to the next player. The next player may not modify the original material, but must add sound (again from one source) to the collage at any point(s). This task is not complete until the final player posts the collage.

As someone early in the process, make sure to leave low-volume or silent areas for others to layer over or fill in.

9 people. Took a long time, but well worth it I think. Here's the process:

1st layer - Ingrid T.
I couldn't think what to do for the sound stuff, so I just typed a bunch of numbers and had the crappy speech program read it off slowly. I kind of like it.

2nd layer - S 4
And I took and recorded the highway sounds coming out of our bathroom vent. And then ran it through bit crusher and scrubby, put it out in a forest in sound designer, vocoded it, split it, and sent one half through a buffer override. Levels got hand scrawled. A lovely little filter journey really.

3rd layer - Oliver X
And I added some acoustic guitar.

4th layer - Celina
I added some distorted bits of conversation.

5th layer - Danger D. Hotrod
I added a drum sample played back at various pitches.

6th layer - Star5
I added some synthy bits that grow more distorted throughout the song.

7th layer - Burn Unit
I felt so inspired that it stirred memories of what has recently inspired me so much. So I added and filtered and adjusted some samples from MLK's last speech just before his death.

8th layer - Space Bug
I added some clarinet with reverb (I like reverb), and some sparse gameboy bleeps that I recorded from nanoloop and then messed with a bit.

final layer - Jesse Morris
Okay, I rained all over it.

It's coming. There are more of us.

It's an audio collage. There's nothing to see.

At the moment, there's nothing to hear either, but I expect that'll be fixed shortly.

I've personally decided that it's always easier to add collaborators after finishing the task proof because the invitation thing is such a hassle.

Someone "submitted proof" before all of us had agreed to collaborate, and it needed at least 3 collaborators to submit proof. The person who submitted proof apparently didn't have the proof. The stunningly nefarious Star5 is fixing it.

You're an ass, OX. =]

On that note, I have also found the collaboration engine confusing... maybe you guys have some suggestions?

well, it seems earlier someone submitted the task, before everyone had accepted.. also with this task i couldn't just submit it all and then add collaborators, because you need at least 3 people to sumbit.

anyway.. i'm working on it.. updating is slow and there are many files..

ok it would also appear that the tracking thing is a tad bugged because I accepted star5's invite yesterday and today I'm still listed as "working on" this task, collaborating with Space Bug. Have the sf0 krew been notified? Cuz I'd like to pick up another task but I'm a little leery of dumping this one...you know how it is, once you get those points, you get all paranoid about keeping them...

I don't *think* there should be any worries, BurnUnit. I still haven't gotten my points, but I'll just let the head honchos know if I continue not to get them. Sometimes it takes a bit to get your points.

Daaang, T. I at least have my points! Ok I'm dropping what I'm signed up for and we'll see what happens. I mean, I did the task, so dropping now isn't going to change that Fact of History(tm).

Well, Burn, I haven't gotten my points yet. Do you still have yours?

If I hadn't known this was associated with sfZ, I could have easily believed this (the final layer) to be the work of some producer in a studio somewhere. Very aphex twin. Well done.

Wow.

That really incredible. I'm more than a little bit jealous of the end product.

We're all good, Burn. All points present and accounted for. I'm back up to the second row, and if it'll stop raining for more than twelve hours at a time, I can finish the task that I was working on at your house.

I love when a task's vote points supercede the original task score... those should go into a Task Hall of Fame... how bout it, gurus? =]
