Make It Work by Ariock Knight, hmrpita (Lenore)
June 17th, 2008 11:50 PM / Location: 37.767952,-122.4878The idea is that a blindfolded Runner starts at the center of a labyrinth (3-, 5-, or 7-circuit classical design, with paths 2-feet wide) and runs out, while the other players form the Walls of the labyrinth and hum to help the runner escape. The walls are supposed to stand firm and after the Runner passes, go to the end of the wall and continue it until the Runner completes the labyrinth.
However, with only 6 people to act as Walls, and a dearth of agility in some cases (mine) and too much in others (our Runner), our Walls couldn't reliably go from a solid wall to run to the next empty spot as the runner passed us.
Our solution was to have the walls run alongside the Runner.
Though we made it work, we were told that our times didn't actually count. And the following week our times were defeated by people in New Zealand and New York.
Ah well.
Maybe next time we'll have more players.

This is a video of our previous training event at Sutro Heights Park participating in a 3-circuit labyrinth. This shows the RIGHT way to do the human labyrinth.

This is a video showing our inability to make a 3-circuit labyrinth work with only 7 people.

I dunno. There is something very cool about the look of the walls moving. I'd love to see it tried out on a larger 'rynth. Really glad to see you folks bringing the tasks outside (in the arg world) in here... more cross pollination is good, I think! Make sure to post the next big 'rynth event!
Jtony is right, there's something hypnotic about the way the walls move. To my mind it's even better in the vid marked "This might work!" than in the final vid... Mesmerising.
I'd never heard of human labyrinths before, but now I have to try them. Please upload a photo to go along with your proof, just so your praxis doesn't show up with a damnable .flv icon next to it -- you deserve way more votes than you've received so far for working out how to do this, and choosing a "this" that is so enticing for us to watch. Kudos.
Thank you for the suggestion Waldo Cheerio--I added a still photo from a previous event.
I will probably be organizing more human labyrinths this summer. I hope people are interested enough to show up (for instance, you seem interested, which is great). I will post the next one here as well as where I have been posting them (Yahoo Upcoming Events).
I liked this one. Nice job. Too bad about the times being beaten.
