Damocles Coulage by Ariock Knight

July 4th, 2007 10:18 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a "sword of damocles" object or device which, when activated, results in an automatic sculpture. (a word about coulage)

Display your coulage and solicit critique.

Bonus points for performing ceromancy upon the results. Mega bonus points if your ceromancy comes true (no faking!).

Idea: Use steam from a kettle to heat a candle in a glass holder that will dump into a bucket of water.
Combine with the "Find Jesus" task Unfortunately, Jesus can't be found by Aesthematics.

Tasks:
Acquire a new tea kettle. (The last was lost after being left on too long. And by "lost" I mean "burned to a crisp.") Ensure that Kettle has a "whistling" feature (see previous explanation)
Acquire a Jesus candle. Since finding jesus is unnecessary, acquire a plain candle. I have these already. *makes checking motion*
Acquire a sword. Done. Also have these lying around the house... *check*
Devise method to start kettle using a sword of damocles...wrap burner control with something attached to the sword?
Acquire a bucket. Done. Homers' in the house. *checky-check*

Ok. On further reflection, there is just NO way that I can see starting the burner on my oven using a sword. I will have to regroup.

Update 2007-07-04
NEW idea:
Use the switch from a lamp, an outlet plugged into the lamp, and the heat from a grill manufactured by a professional boxer.
Sword can easily trip switch, making for happy Ariocks.

See the photos/videos for how it went, and for the final sculpture.

I am inclined to call it Albino Scorpion Nesting in Skull. I can easily make a prediction that the Scorpion represents my mother (Scorpio) and that the skull represents my impending birthday. Obviously, my mother will visit on the day of my birthday just over a week from now. Since this has already been planned for a couple of weeks, I feel confident that it will come true.

(Edited to rename the title of the piece. It obviously wasn't a Scorpion Nesting in a Skull. What was I thinking?? It was an ALBINO Scorpion blahblah)

The adapter screws into the Lamp, and the bulb screws into the adapter. The grill plugs into the side of the adapter.

Now, when the sword activates the device, we'll know because the light will be illuminated.

how this got overlooked I'll never know but it's pretty awesome—never thought I'd be so excited to wait for wax to melt. I might have done the reading off the initial casting/splash because that felt the most like a singular random event such as swirling tea leaves or whatever . but it's still awesome. ariock you need to come back now.
