Invent a New Word by Cateyes Sassalot

May 29th, 2007 7:12 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Invent a new word, come up with a realistic sounding meaning.

Use the word in common everyday sentences; define for those who inquire.

Task is complete when someone else starts using your word.

I invented this a while ago in response to those who were offended by saying "Bless you" after a sneeze. Since then it has been in usage by several people I know and can be verified by TheMuse Sassalot...

Portays
PORT-ayz
Excalmation used to acknowledge a sneeze. In fact comes from "Polite Obligatory Remark To Acknowledge Your Sneeze"

EXAMPLE:
"Achoo" followed by huge snot wind
"Portays!" handing tissue

- smaller

When people say "Bless you" I always responded with… and also with you!

Agreeing with the Buddhist point of view that there is a god but we need to take care of ourselves I replaced "Bless you" w/ "Take Care" Figuring taking care of yourself would yield better results then a blessing. God has no time for your cold… besides… he made viruses' too!

So true!
I grew up in an Irish Catholic household and the "bless you" is ingrained training. For me I guess it hasn't been so much as any kind of religious belief as a polite thing to say. Thus...portays was born trying to rethink the sneeze factor :-)

I LOVE this word. Cateyes did indeed make it up and I love using it... trying to spread the gospel hehe.
