Trespassing the Future by Aly

March 15th, 2008 1:23 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Go to a place you will not be able to go to in 10 years; for instance, a place under development that will never be the same again.

My original idea was to go visit the burned out building in my apartment complex. One of the buildings here burned a few months ago, and they've left the remnants around in the meantime. While I've been surprised at how long they've left it to linger, I don't think it'll still be there ten years from now.

Also, it appropriately enough is labeled with a "No Trespassing" sign.

There's a tiny crack in the fence, so I squeezed through just to get these next two pictures (I didn't really want to play around in the structure and potentially collapse it on myself)

Since I didn't actually go into the structure, and since this is five steps from my door, it felt kind of cheap. So I decided to trespass on the future again, and went to Schoolkids Records on Franklin Street, which is closing down. Schoolkids has been there for as long as I can remember. I think I probably first bought a CD there some ten years ago. I'm pretty saddened that it's closing, although all my friends have pointed out that CD Alley is just as Old School Chapel Hill, and has better prices.

Anyways, here's me at the soon-to-disappear Schoolkids:

And just to prove I went there, here's me looking grim about my childhood hometown losing all of its grunge-era landmarks:

No Trespassing

This sign is on the chain-link fence surrounding the burned out building in my apartment complex.

Always sad to see independent record stores close. Great one here called Soundclash Records going strong :D

Well, as I mentioned, we still have CD Alley here, and I think Schoolkids may still have other locations in nearby towns (a lot of local chains have a store/restaurant in Chapel Hill, one in Durham, and another in Raleigh, to complete the triangle.) However, I live in Chapel Hill, and as long as I've been here, that place has been a landmark.

Yet at the same time, I try to remind myself that resistance to change would mean death. So. Chapel Hill lives on through change. Good luck to whatever replaces Schoolkids.

Why do all the good shops close?
It's the same situation as my local Weigh and Save when I did this task...
