Photo Competition Number 1 by Flitworth, Loki, Cthulhu Kitty
February 3rd, 2008 9:22 PMWe decided to try a somewhat different take on this task. In an attempt to make it possible to share in this at a distance without losing the collaborative experience, we split the event into two rounds.
In the first round, players photograph all the five required elements in the task description. Then, we take a look at each other's photos.
In the second round, instead of taking wild-card photos, players attempt to take photos which are inspired in some way by their collaborator's round one shots.
Total time for both rounds is 90 minutes, which players can split up however they like. Uploading and other processing doesn't count toward the time limit, and only sharpening, color-correction, and brightness/contrast adjustments are allowed in post-processing.
Round One Comments
Loki:
I'm no fan of competitive tasking, so this seemed a neat way to rework the task.
I wrote down the five required elements and carried them in my pocket for several days. While walking with a friend after work one evening, I decided to begin and asked him for a portrait. A few moments later I discovered that the place I had hoped to find most of my shots was temporarily off limits due to construction, and I wound up scrambling around in a bit of a panic looking for interesting things to photograph. I'm lucky that photographing just about anything around here winds up looking fairly neat. Total time: 42 minutes.
Flitworth:
I opted to go to the COEX mall in Seoul because I had not yet been and it sounded like it would have a lot of potential for a variety of subjects. Also, it is indoors, which is very important in winter...yet makes me sound like a complete prat given Loki's locus. I, too, have mixed feelings about competitive tasking and was quite honoured to be invited to this re-interpretation.
Round Two Comments
Flitworth:
For round two I chose to take photos outside in my neighborhood in response to (and to combine) the warm, homey feel of Cthulhu Kitty's and the chilly, outdoorsyness of Loki's.
Loki:
This turned out to be much, much harder than I expected. My collaborator's photos are great, but I had a tough time finding satisfying references, at least within the time limit. I'm pretty happy with my version of Flitworth's text (despite the fact that it lacks the wonderful text itself) and also Katotoro's text. The rest are a bit forced. Total time: 33 minutes, not counting a brief pause to fetch a new camera battery from my room nor the time to print out Kat's cat's photo.
Cthuhlu Kitty
This was tons of fun and definitely challenged me to think creatively. So, when shall we begin Photo Competition Number Two? :)

and here's a question for Loki:
If the penguin lives outside, and is so small, how does it avoid getting buried in the snow?
The rest are a bit forced.
Waah my pictures are forced! Waaaahhh!
South Pole. South Pole. South Pole!!
aaaand... vote.
That business is stocked up on all the right sauces according to my observation. No shortage of whiskey to keep you warm.
I am very much a fan of long distance collaboration, so you're inspiring me to keep figuring out how to do more of it!
Also OMGSOUTHPOOOOOOOOOOLE! That is just... wow. SF0 is being played at the South Pole, I should quit whining about not having any other players nearby. (Though today I did try to rope some of my students in....)
@scienceguru-
Yeah, that's what I thought. And yet, Loki found that stuffed cutey not too far from the station.
Flitworth´s text and Loki´s skies, together (which one is inspired on which?):
I love your new take on the task.
