Photo Competition Number 1 by Flitworth, Loki, Cthulhu Kitty
February 3rd, 2008 9:22 PMWe decided to try a somewhat different take on this task. In an attempt to make it possible to share in this at a distance without losing the collaborative experience, we split the event into two rounds.
In the first round, players photograph all the five required elements in the task description. Then, we take a look at each other's photos.
In the second round, instead of taking wild-card photos, players attempt to take photos which are inspired in some way by their collaborator's round one shots.
Total time for both rounds is 90 minutes, which players can split up however they like. Uploading and other processing doesn't count toward the time limit, and only sharpening, color-correction, and brightness/contrast adjustments are allowed in post-processing.
Round One Comments
Loki:
I'm no fan of competitive tasking, so this seemed a neat way to rework the task.
I wrote down the five required elements and carried them in my pocket for several days. While walking with a friend after work one evening, I decided to begin and asked him for a portrait. A few moments later I discovered that the place I had hoped to find most of my shots was temporarily off limits due to construction, and I wound up scrambling around in a bit of a panic looking for interesting things to photograph. I'm lucky that photographing just about anything around here winds up looking fairly neat. Total time: 42 minutes.
Flitworth:
I opted to go to the COEX mall in Seoul because I had not yet been and it sounded like it would have a lot of potential for a variety of subjects. Also, it is indoors, which is very important in winter...yet makes me sound like a complete prat given Loki's locus. I, too, have mixed feelings about competitive tasking and was quite honoured to be invited to this re-interpretation.
Round Two Comments
Flitworth:
For round two I chose to take photos outside in my neighborhood in response to (and to combine) the warm, homey feel of Cthulhu Kitty's and the chilly, outdoorsyness of Loki's.
Loki:
This turned out to be much, much harder than I expected. My collaborator's photos are great, but I had a tough time finding satisfying references, at least within the time limit. I'm pretty happy with my version of Flitworth's text (despite the fact that it lacks the wonderful text itself) and also Katotoro's text. The rest are a bit forced. Total time: 33 minutes, not counting a brief pause to fetch a new camera battery from my room nor the time to print out Kat's cat's photo.
Cthuhlu Kitty
This was tons of fun and definitely challenged me to think creatively. So, when shall we begin Photo Competition Number Two? :)
Loki: Business

There's only one place within hundreds of miles in which it is possible to spend money, and this is it. I was planning to take a photo of shelved souvenirs, but the people behind the register were so awesome I couldn't resist asking them for a picture. The photo may not be artistic, but it makes me smile.
Loki: Intersection

Where the tracks road meets the airstrip. It's not all that exciting, but intersections are hard to come by here.
Flitworth: Place of Business

What do you get when you mix Brad Pitt's earlier movies with Starbucks?
Flitworth: Portrait

Anthropomorphizing things that are intended for eating never ceases to mystify me. This is marginally less creepy than the various pigs one finds in the Deep South of the US where gleeful looking, bibbed pigs wave tongs and invite you to slaughter, baste, and consume them.
Flitworth: Text

I can assure you that there was no shortage of amusing English abuse at the COEX mall but this seemed to be something that speaks to the spirit of SFZero.
Katotoro: Black and White

It's a black and white kitty next to a black and white picture of a black and white panda
It's Good to Sit on the Bench Here

This bench in my neighborhood has a game board painted on! I've never seen it used. Occasionally one might find a sullen teenager playing games on their cellphone while sitting on this. A nod to the game store picture.
Simple

It means "flower". I didn't have much luck with text that lent itself to honoring my collaborator's photos, sadly.
Katotoro: Winter Landscape

Inspired by Loki's stark Winter Landscapes. It also makes me think of Narnia
Katotoro: Weird Anime character

Inspired by Flitworth's weird anime character. This shot was not filtered in any way. Everything really was this pink. Honest.
Loki: Round 2 - 1

Inspired by Flitworth's Text. (Yes, the sky is on the bottom. I held the camera upside down. Actually, this is the top of the back side of a big banner as viewed through a window.)
Loki: round 2- 4

An attempt to recreate Katotoro's portrait, using actors who've never seen the photo and a photographer who clearly didn't properly remember all the details.
Loki: Round 2 - 5

A take on Katotoro's black and white: a black and white (stuffed) animal in front of a print of a black and white animal in front of a print of a black and white animal. (I would have brought it inside to recreate the wall and carpet frame, but I was running short on time and this stuffed penguin lives outside some distance from station.)

and here's a question for Loki:
If the penguin lives outside, and is so small, how does it avoid getting buried in the snow?
The rest are a bit forced.
Waah my pictures are forced! Waaaahhh!
South Pole. South Pole. South Pole!!
aaaand... vote.
That business is stocked up on all the right sauces according to my observation. No shortage of whiskey to keep you warm.
I am very much a fan of long distance collaboration, so you're inspiring me to keep figuring out how to do more of it!
Also OMGSOUTHPOOOOOOOOOOLE! That is just... wow. SF0 is being played at the South Pole, I should quit whining about not having any other players nearby. (Though today I did try to rope some of my students in....)
@scienceguru-
Yeah, that's what I thought. And yet, Loki found that stuffed cutey not too far from the station.
Flitworth´s text and Loki´s skies, together (which one is inspired on which?):
I love your new take on the task.
