The original

The original

What better secret than to hide an egg inside an egg? I'm going to nickname this task "hardboiled."

Encased in plasticine

Encased in plasticine

The first step is to divide the egg in two so I can cast a rubber mold.

Assembling the frame

Assembling the frame

I build a frame of foam core around the plasticine.

Ready to pour

Ready to pour

I made sure the plasticine didn't leave any gaps.

Mixing the mold material

Mixing the mold material

Blue and pink make purple!

Letting the mold set

Letting the mold set

With time, hopefully the air bubbles all rise to the surface. I've never done this before. It's a learning experience.

Removing the frame

Removing the frame

So far, so good.

Half a rubber mold

Half a rubber mold

I couldn't have asked for a better half mold. Now time to pour the second half.

Mixing the second half

Mixing the second half

Blue and pink make purple! I didn't have specific mold release, but I brushed a thin layer of Vaseline on everything so the two halves separate.

The completed mold

The completed mold

Crap. The mold didn't release. Guess I should have bought the real stuff. Luckily I was able to cut the mold open pretty easily and not ruin it, but I did lose the keys I cut into the first half. I'll just have to eyeball it to make sure it's even when I pour the resin.

Setting the yolk

Setting the yolk

I made the yolk out of polymer clay. I let a little pool of resin semi-set so I can rest the yolk halfway in it.

Pouring the resin

Pouring the resin

I cut air vents and a pouring plug, and filled it up with clear resin until the resin flowed up the air vents.

The rough egg

The rough egg

Hmm, pretty rough. Did I mention I've never done this before? Lots of air bubbles.

Flash lines

Flash lines

Not too bad, though. It'll just take a little cleaning up.

Polished

Polished

As polished as it's going to get.

Preparing the secret

Preparing the secret

As gentle as I was, I cracked the shell a little bit. It will still serve my purpose.

Halfway there

Halfway there

The secret egg inside the original egg.

Hidden

Hidden

It's a good thing I had to sand and polish the resin cast, or else it wouldn't have fit inside the original egg. Silly physics.

In the supermarket

In the supermarket

It was a dreary morning, the rain making the streets glisten like the sweat on an exotic dancer's forehead. The perfect setting for my hardboiled excursion.

One egg among many

One egg among many

The only thing that will give this away is that there's a spare egg which I left tucked to the side of the display. I didn't want to steal.

A worthy first task,
to make a clever fake egg.
Gummies like Haiku.

Awesome.

Good mold releases help a lot. What kind of resin did you use?

Materials

Mold: Smooth-On OOMOO-30 tin-cure silicone rubber
Yolk: Super Sculpey polymer clay
Cast: Castin' Craft polyester resin

Until I sanded it down, the cast was still a little sticky. I think I didn't use enough catalyst, because I wasn't sure how "thick" it was going to be, according to the directions. Did thickness mean height or width in this case? I let it cure for two full days, but I still left fingerprints in it when I touched it. Maybe that was a case of reacting with the Vaseline, because once I sanded and buffed it (I love my Dremel tool) it wasn't sticky anymore. Next time I'll also make larger air vents and pour hole (I'm sure it would help to cast those into the mold instead of cutting them out later as I did).

i suggest all your tasks be things you have never done before if you are capable of this level of win.

Seriously, if you did a task with something you were practiced at, the rest of us might have to up and quit out of despair of ever achieving the same level of awesome.

Wait, no, I would never have joined SF0 if I used that logic, not after seeing Dance Dance Immolation.

Brilliant! Super tasking.
Gosh, you could even have written a secret message on the inside of the egg shell, but I think I like the complete lack of any written explanation that the egg buyer would experience.

Difficile! +2

Thank you for sharing the step by step photos of your process. I think your egg is very pretty. You might want to be a little wary, though. Behind all that beauty, I just know it's hiding something.
