Before I started this one, I gave it a great deal of thought- the light rail fare is $2 during rush hour, and three days of twice a day rush hour was more than my ten dollars would take me. I also decided not to "stock up" beforehand, but to make do with what I had. So I decided to make the most of my happy little Hamilton and biked the six miles to work on Thursday, ate the lentils and rice I'd made the night before for lunch, and after work biked over to Star5's place to hang out with her a bit as well as with Mister Danger. I was already starting to feel sort of off, and eventually decided to bike home, as I was getting the chills and was feeling really low energy.
Whether it was the stomach flu or food poisoning, let me tell you, it's easy not to spend money when you're laying immobile on the couch with no appetite. I spent the night unsuccessfully battling the chills, and grasping my revolt-prone stomach. Friday I called in sick to work and spent the day laying on the couch, not eating, and trying to stay perfectly still. By Friday night I was so stir-crazy and bored, that I decided to go to poker night anyway. A five dollar buy-in to go out first and spend the rest of the evening on someone else's couch, watching them play poker. Fairly entertaining, and worth my five dollars. (I actually tied for the three-way pity pot, and won $1.66, but having contacted the task's originator, any winnings were not to be spent as part of my $10.)
Saturday I force-fed myself a little, and eventually biked over to Macalester in the evening, where I attended a small bit of my class reunion. I tried to spend some of my remaining $5 on a soda, but sodas and wine were on the house, so after I'd had my fill of reuniting, I stopped off at Whole Foods and bought some rice flour ($2.99) before heading home.
Honestly, I want to give this task another go later on, because I feel like having been sick warped the enjoyable as well as the hard aspects of its completion. At the same time, if I'd decided to give up at any point, I could have used mass transit rather than biking around, so I do feel like I gave it a fair go.
