Mistakes Happen by Ink Tea

INSTRUCTIONS: Think of an important mistake you made in the past, and make it again.

So, back in 2002, I had a vintage Schwinn bike, which I would ride to and from work. This bike made me incredibly happy, and was named "Mercury". Mercury was my sole method of transportation, and we were very happy together. One day, on my way to work, I was struck by a motorist. The collision messed up my front wheel significantly enough that I could not ride my bike.

Eventually, I saved up enough money to get Mercury fixed, and in 2003, I had an accident that caused the both of us to go bouncing down the pavement, tangled up in one another. Mercury's frame was bent beyond repair, and I had a few scrapes.

Then in 2004, I had a bike made out of spare parts- a bianchi frame, a huffy seat, some other kind of handlebars. This bike was not as nice, because it was a little awkward, like Frankenstein's monster. But I loved it because it got me places, and I named it the "Muttbike". One day I was biking to work, and a left-turning car cut me off (me, in the bikelane) and totalled the muttbike.

Today, on my way to work, I decided to make this important mistake again. Better. Bigger. With less damage. I decided this not because I had a choice in the matter, but because a car came jumping out of the alley at me, and really what are you going to do, but tumble over the hood of the car and bring the bike after you? This is exactly what I did.

My front wheel is out of true, and my nose will be bruised tomorrow, I think, but my laptop is unmarred. Now that I've made this mistake a number of times, I think I don't want to make it anymore. When I've got better light, I'll get a video of my wobbly wheel and my nose, if it bruises.

I <3 bikes.

I once made a similar mistake, but it never involved another car - only loose shoelaces, a steep hill, and a Pete Rose slide.

I have learned from your task completion that indeed there is great difference between decision and choice.

hey, don't do that. it hurts.

sorry to hear you're hurt; sounds as if you're at least getting better at not having your bicycles wrecked, though.

Yes, Saul, I made this important decision as I was in the process of sailing over the car. "I guess I'm going to tumble over the top of this car! I thought they only did this in movies!"

Not too hurt, Alis, considering. A bruised nose and some sore muscles when there could have been concussion, broken bones, bleeding, such. Knock on wood, or somesuch supersticiousness!

I wanna see that nose bruise! I mean, I'm sorry you're hurt and I'm glad you're not hurt more. I like non-serious, visually interesting injuries though. My recent kickball scrape is healing up nicely and so's my bruised-up knee. Fun!

It appears my nose is unbruised, but I assure you it *feels* bruised. You can see only a little pink spot near my eyebrow.

I've uploaded a video of the untrue wheel here.

Only when I've done two, is it too many.

Ah, okay. If a bruise develops let us know.
