Plagiarize Yourself by Ink Tea

August 14th, 2007 11:11 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Plagiarize yourself.

How does one plagiarize themselves? How do you parade something as your own work, without permission? By claiming something of your own as yours, you give yourself permission. But by popular demand, Fanny Pants' attempts to pass off my writing as her own was flagged by at least 5 people (not including me), overriding any permission I gave myself. The residents of SF0 deemed my behavior unpermissable.

Darkaardvark was correct.

I have to admit, though. I felt a little bad- all those kind folks standing up for me- some of the best personalities of Glasnost were scolding that foul little hussy. I felt both touched that at least 5 people would call her out on her blatant act of uncreativity, and I felt like a foul little hussy*. And then I discovered the task had been retired shortly before I conceived my devious plot! I confessed my awful prank to SF0, and asked for judgment.

I'm glad I paid off the postman.

GUILTY! And well done.

Nice.

I'm particularly impressed by the comment you left on the task. It's a convincing piece of misdirection, yet contains no untruths.

I originally suspected it was either you doing this or someone aiming at suicide. But upon discovering suicide was retired and reading your comment, I for one was convinced it was an instance of genuine plagiarism. Nicely done.

(Okay, now that's out of the way, is it time for a long debate over the meaning of yourself in a game where you can be your character but your character need not be you? Or was that one already settled before my time?)

Dear Loki,

During the Impossible Exchange there was a most clever villain named Oliver X, another Minnesotan- one who threatened popular and charming Piratey Monkey's hold on the top score. In fact, during Impossible Exchange, there were many Minnesotans, and we knew who all of them were, being they were all from Minneapolis/St. Paul- and mostly, we were all friends.

Until Jeannine. No one knew who she was, which was rather exciting to us. Some folks got socially entangled with Jeannine, not having ever met her, some of us were more oblivious to her. We were pleased to see she'd gotten the upper hand on Olly once.

Little did we know, but nefarious Oliver X was just gaining leverage against Piratey, and forging Jeannine's existence.

Where I had been against alternate accounts in the past, I was a little less so with Jeannine. Oliver hadn't used Jeannine to garner points for himself (aka collaborating with Jeannine to open OliverX up to points available in BartPA tasks), or to use her votes on himself or his friends, as votes were a bit of a precious commodity back then. (Whether I am InkTea in or out of game, and whether InkTea is me- this is as much Inktea's act as it is mine. As we are both passionate and obssessive about words and language- many of the prior executions of Plagiarism seemed as if they didn't take into account the meaning of plagiarism and the philosophy of permission.)

The thought to be suspicious certainly crossed my mind... but I've seen legitimate plagiarism take place on teh interweb too much for me to be comfortable with *not* calling them (er, you) out on it.

Well done, though. Definitely a more legitimate completion of this task than many, maybe all of the others.

So it was you who sent me the request to be the mentor of Fanny Pants. I never responded because I was pissed off that someone would steal your work. Clever indeed! Either way, thanks for thinking of me.

Aww!

Dear Rainbow Bright,

I wasn't sure how far I wanted to take Fanny. I wasn't sure how long it'd take her task to get noticed and X'd. I picked you, because I figured Fanny would pick a female who was fairly active and successful during Glasnost.

I'm flattered that you were angry on my behalf. I was curious how you'd react, and was intrigued at the prospect of how someone would coach me towards better tasks. Would her plea spark your sympathies or suspicions? I didn't imagine anyone would be pissed off for me.

I guess that'll teach you all to be protective of me!

Love,
Inky

Dear Blueberry,

The image is from a webcomic called Scary Go Round, which I've been following for a number of years. The character is Natalie Durand, a saucy (dead) french girl who now works as a grim reaper.

Dear YellowBear,

I didn't think I was laying any sort of a smackdown. I thought I was being gentle, but firm.

Like I am with your mom.

Inky

(Just kidding. Guess I'm saucy today.)

Oh No You Didn't!!! *gasp* you are indeed saucy today. But she will most likely have the chance to read this offense herself. She has long considered herself an sf0 voyeur, and often likes to check in on what her cub has been up to. Perhaps this will finally spur her into creating her own account and speaking up against this senseless (though hilarious) mother slandering!

Thank you for the concise and thoroughly referenced background info, Ink Tea. We latecomers usually have to make do with scattered, disordered comments in the praxis when attempting to piece together the complicated relationships and history here. I had gathered that Minnesota was anomalously well represented among the best players, but that's about it.

The Jeannine saga is entertaining, and certainly ranks among the more ethical uses one can imagine for an alt-persona. (FannyPants and The Big Red X are even clearer cases.)

While we're on the topic of fake characters, does anyone feel like explaining to a newbie what is behind all the religious figures, philosophers, corporate logos, and Supreme Court Justices in the player list? They don't seem to do very much.

Dear Loki,

I'm going to quickly become an SF0 historian, though I'm much more a remnant of Impossible Exchange than I am one of the high rollin' Glasnost folks, and I haven't kept up with a lot of the things that have happened in this more recent era.

I'll post more SF0 history lessons later.

Dear Loki,

I love it when people are interested in history! I have gone to great effort to try to piece together the things that were going on around here before I joined. In refrence to the Supreme Court & the corporations they are related to a certain campaign, a clever attempt to sieze senatorial power. When I was new here they were deeply involved in a rubin invasion. Everyones profile pic looked the same. the praxis was full of non completions. 'Rubin Hates it' was written everywhere. I didn't understand a thing.

As for the 'philosphoers club', they have showed up only very recently and for no clear purpose. so far as I can tell they have not yet been put to any use.

No one likes history.

But everyone likes stories. (I can't remember which historian I'm stealing that from, but rest assured it is stolen.) Thanks for the history, Ink.

Dear Spidere,

Did you personally solicit all of your votes? I'm curious to see how well it worked for you- obviously your task itself was well done, crisp and charmingly documented, but I'm curious about your methods. Please tell.
