I suppose it isn't really spam, but the way I read the task you just had to send an e-mail and receive a reply without them identifying you.

I'd like other people's thoughts on whether this approach counts as completing the task.
I could always try again with someone else...

You should try to get rid of the 'or'...

Or you could just put your second one in and press return a few times. It worked for me.
