Regarding the original photo I posted here:
Imported a black and white photo of ma head. Used artrage to trace ma face using the paintbrush tool and the "Choose Colors from Tracing Image" setting. Then used the paintroller to create a gradient effect in the foreground. Selected blend modes and varying opacity on the layers. Exported as .jpg. Cropped with Picasa. Uploaded. Here.

It's perhaps the most satisfying piece of free graphic design software I've ever used. Even better with a pen tablet...
