Seeing Beyond Sight Photo Challenge by Lizard Boy

February 17th, 2007 10:52 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Seeing Beyond Sight has partnered with SFZero to challenge you to see the world differently - with more than your eyes.

Welcome new users: SFZero is an ongoing game in which you can choose to participate (or not) after you do the Seeing Beyond Sight Challenge.

Click here for new user registration.

1. Blindfold yourself.
(wear shades or tape your eyes shut)

2. Go out in public and make your way in the world.
(go 1 block, 1 hour or 1 roll of film; go with a friend or alone; make up your own process)

3. Photograph things you notice. And, just notice.
(What do you notice differently about objects, people, actions, interactions?)

4. Embrace the whole experience as much as the picture taking.
(Engage. Have a conversation with people you encounter. Take it all in.)

5. Share your story.
(For each photograph write a caption about your experience - a few lines or several paragraphs if you want.)

6. Challenge some friends to do it.
(email them the link: sf0.org/seeingbeyondsight)

Please don't post all the pictures from your shoot, but chose 1 to 3 that are the best images or are most telling of your experience. Caption the photos describing something about your experience - that is as important as the image itself. Longer stories are welcomed and may be added to www.seeingbeyondsight.org.

If you depend on your eyes to get around, then it is hard not to use them. Although you can tell us about how difficult it is to be blind, focus more on what you noticed about the world as you embarked on this journey.

This experience isn’t about blindness – it is about seeing, noticing and paying attention with more than your eyes.

This challenge was inspired by SEEING BEYOND SIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLIND TEENAGERS, a new book published by Chronicle Books.

I wandered around my dorm for about 40 minutes, taking pictures of various things I found interesting. Because I still haven't learned to in-line pictures, my comments will be in captions on the pictures.

Ridges.jpg

Ridges.jpg

Around the sides of this speaker cage are some rubber ridges. I'd never actually looked at the sides of it before, I don't think.

Door Mat.jpg

Door Mat.jpg

It turns out that this door mat, and the ridge in the concrete that you can see behind it, are very good indicators of when you're near the door/wall.

Smell.jpg

Smell.jpg

My use of smell. My first clue that this pumpkin cake was there was the smell of it.

Lounge Person.jpg

Lounge Person.jpg

When I walked into the lounge I expected at least one person to be in there, but I couldn't hear anything. I heard someone clear their throat, and walked over in that direction (it was a person playing video games to the left of this picture) but then stood around for a good 30-40 seconds not hearing anything before I finally asked if there was anyone in the room. Before I asked I had had no clue that this person was in there. I'm surprised at how well I managed to center him in the picture, especially since he hadn't made noise for quite a while before I took this picture.

Railing Drop.jpg

Railing Drop.jpg

This drop in the railing before the stair is a whole lot more noticeable when you're navigating by touch. I was aware of it before, but I never noticed just how large a drop it was.

Small Plate.jpg

Small Plate.jpg

The thing I like about this picture is that I didn't even notice the large plate off to the side until after I took this picture. That actually happened a lot, I would take a picture of one thing, and then move past that thing only to stumble into something else that I'd accidentally taken a picture of.

Non-obvious.jpg

Non-obvious.jpg

I thought the screws in the bottom of this were going to be completely obvious in this picture. They were obvious to me!

Grout.jpg

Grout.jpg

The grout around the railing was only on the top part of it, making a rather sharp (sudden-sharp not cut-sharp) edge about the middle. I've never noticed this before, but it was a big deal to my hands.

Gap.jpg

Gap.jpg

This break in the railing startled me when I came to it.

Blindfold.jpg

Blindfold.jpg

Me blindfolded. The thing took the longest time to tie well. I'm used to trying that around my waist, not my head, and I also had to tie it front-to-back reverse from what I'm used to, since I didn't want the knot hanging down in front of my face.

Neat that you noticed so many things that have been there all along.
