Perform A _____ Deed by Eddie Arlette

August 12th, 2006 9:31 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Perform a good deed.

Or, perform a bad deed.

Last weekend one my best friends, Cam, fell while skating and broke her elbow in three places -- requiring 15 screws and a couple plates to be put in. Fortunately, she was staying with her parents, so she could recover a bit before returning to Paris. Unfortunately, I knew that she'd be psychotic after a few days of being housebound with them.

So since I had a free day this week (I do consulting), I flew down to Los Angeles to give her a couple hours away from the family and take her out to our favorite sushi restaurant for some comfort food. Unfortunately, Thursday turned out to be one of the worse days to fly. I heard the news about foiled bombing plot while driving to the San Jose airport, so I was able to leave behind a few things that would've been confiscated (although I did end up sacrificing a chapstick to the TSA gods). However, since it was an early flight, a lot of other people in line hadn't heard the news and ended up throwing away a bunch of stuff. The line to security snaked all the way out to the parking lot. Obviously some people were annoyed at having to throw out stuff, but overall people were pretty stoic about it. (Normally, there'd be a least a couple people throwing hissy fits about one thing or another, but I didn't see anyone doing that that morning.) Fortunately, with a little last minute sprinting I was able to make my flight.

Once down in LA, Cam and I had a long lunch at the restaurant and eating sushi was a good way for Cam to try and regain mobility in the arm. (Apparently with elbows you need to start moving them immediately to prevent permanent stiffness, so she didn't have a cast.) Having had knee surgery myself, I know how painful it must have been for her to bend the elbow, but she was a good sport about it -- a couple bottles of saki also helped.

I ended up leaving earlier than I'd planned that afternoon because all the warnings about how people should get to the airport extra early. But when I got back to LAX, I literally went though security in less than 5 minutes. Sheesh... But then all the flights were horribly delayed. I was able to get on an earlier flight, which was only an hour-and-a-half late.

So all-in-all quite a long day, but worth it to cheer up a friend.
