Nice To Meet You by Ohrlyeh Totenkinder

I gave Mella a card that I had reserved for the first person who gave me an unsolicited compliment. The card read,
Inside the card read,
I included in the card a M.U.S.C.L.E. man as a gift.
This Task was completed at Yuri's Night San Francisco. Mella Complemented my shirt. Upon handing her the card I informed her that I had been carrying it around for a week. Sadly, this was true.
Day 1(Friday): I decided that I would not take complements from my customers at work. There were a couple reasons for this, firstly it seems a little unprofessional to present a customer with a rubber wrestler and I like for my tasks to be completed with people who appreciate them. Secondly: I didn’t want my complement to be one expressed out of politeness, but sincerity. It didn’t matter much because for the next two days I didn't receive any compliment sincere or not.
Day 3 (Sunday): Brunch: nothing. Easter in the park: I figured that It would be next to impossible to get a compliment with all the extravagant drag action everywhere. I figured right. That night LeEvil decided that it was time to dye my hair. She turned most of it a very deep shade of blue....not all of it...just everything but the roots and the sides....It didn't look very good. regardless, I hoped it would be compliment worthy.
Day 4 (Monday): I stayed home and didn't see anyone.
Day 5: (Tuesday): I had a false alarm. The delivery driver says something about my hair. I think there might be a compliment on it's way; I was mistaken.
Ron: You dyed your hair blue?
Chris: Yeah, well I didn't...my girlfriend did, but yeah.
Ron: I like the brown better. the red was good too, but the brown is better. I mean It looks good, I just like the brown better.
I decided I really couldn’t in good conscious count this as a compliment.
Day 6 (Thursday) Another not-really-compliment about my hair from the head of human resources. apparently it makes me look too pale. As a Goth boy I think I could have legally taken it as a compliment, but it wasn't really intended that way, so....meh. However the same head of human resources along with my boss informed the new district manager about how "awesome" I am. I was not around to witness the compliment and I only found out about it after I showed boss lady the envelope complaining: "I made this card to give to the first person who gave me an unsolicited compliment...I've had it for nearly a week now."
Day 8 (Saturday) Friday night I screen printed some shirts. I wore one to work. One of my coworkers did asked me if I did it and told me that he really liked it, but only after I complimented his shirt I could tell the he really like it, but the fact that I started the love-in be construed as fishing and fighting was cheating. the remainder of the day went by totally devoid of compliment.
Then came Yuri's night. I'm not going to go into great detail, but I was dancing and I ALWAYS get complemented when I am dancing.....not this time...... but then there was Mella!
Mella: Hey, Lemi see (pulls top shirt) Nice. where did you get that?
Chris: I screened it myself, last night.
Mella: That is really cool!
Chris: Thank you (smiles, goes and digs out the now rather crumpled and dejected looking card.) Here!
Mella: (Gets really excited reads the card) Wow. I won and I didn’t even know I was a contestant!
I realised after this week that going around waiting for compliments is a very sad disappointing way to live. Keep in mind, I spent much time with friends...good times...much fun throughout the week, but there was no random complimenting. Constantly expecting and anticipating the complements cast a slight shadow over that enjoyment. I know my frined like me and care about me so normally I have no need to be complimented, but having that card in my pack kept the thought of nice words in the forefront of my mind. I was dissaponted alot. there is realy no point in all that.
To whomever paid me an unsolicited compliment
Inside the card read,
Thank you for your kindness. It really made me feel warm inside. as a token of my gratitude, here is a M.U.S.C.L.E. man.
-Love Chris

I thought it was particularly interesting that you found out that specifically watching for compliments affected your normal fun experiences. I have heard of the Hawthorne effect (people who know they are under observation act different) but had never thought about the effect on the observer himself.

Yeah, It was interesting. Every little thing I did was accompanied with, "will this get me a compliment?". When it didn't come there was slight disappointment. I can imagine it being approximate to someone with low self esteem in constant need of approval.
A M.U.S.C.L.E. man is the best gift ever. So many childhood memories tied up with those little guys. I know this is kind of solicited, but great gift!
