Work is So Strange by Orange Rose hopes of peace

January 22nd, 2007 10:25 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Describe in some detail the strangest thing that happened to you at work in the past week. If you don't work, describe the strangest thing that happened to you during a leisure activity.

I wish I could give titles to my proofs. This one would totally be "The sensory overload that is babysitting." Let me explain, I've been a babysitter for many different families, many different kids. Inevitably, though, It is a MESSY job. Example: Today, I babysat for my latest charge, a five-year-old with Down's Syndrome. I can come up with a strange or disgusting occurence that assailed each one of my senses while at work.
First, the sights. The strange looks I get when I take him for a walk are hilarious. No, I am NOT his mother, so stop looking at me like I'm a whore or something.
Second, the textures. There's nothing more "fun" to clean up than a conglomeration of fish sticks, tartar sauce, and apple sauce. Especially when they've been rubbed all over the face and into the hair. Let the stickiness begin!
Third, the smells. Dirty Diapers. 'Nough said.
Fourth, the tastes. It's a great part of babysitting, you get to identify with the kid. Meaning you eat the same meal they do. Huzzah for fish sticks, I haven't eaten these since I was six years old...
Fifth, the sounds. This kid is deaf, so he doesn't speak. He's started to make sounds, though. Mostly either a loud yell or a guttural throat-clearing sound. It's especially fun when he screams while we walk by some strangers, who then give me looks, wondering what I did to the poor kid.

So, overall, a job that leaves me satisfied, and seriously in need of a shower and several hand washings.

Fish sticks!

I definitely ate fish sticks all summer the last time I did some serious babysitting. And cheerios. I even started to water down the apple juice I'd give myself so I didn't get too much of a sugar rush. Quite immersive, babysitting...

oh man.

this hardens my intention to forever maintain a joyfully barren womb.
