Pants Observation Exercise by Møuse

April 2nd, 2007 9:22 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take a photo of a stranger's pants.

Armed with endless free time journeying through London, I decided to take on the task of observing peoples pants.

However on my train ride towards Waterloo, I found myself gripped with a pants/trousers conundrum. To whit, If a person refers to their leg clothing as trousers, then they have defined the item as such, and not as pants.. and, thought I, I am most certainly on this adventure to observe pants and none other! This will not do indeed.

One possible route to solve this pedantic poser would be to take the route afforded me by British nuance and photograph some young lady’s undergarments. However this could result in a police inquiry if I was caught photographing said items so I hastily declined that option (Though not before smiling as it reminded me of the homonym task ... not that I was taking pictures of young ladies' undergarments in that task either but..).

After some thought, I decided to let different phraseology hang, and instead enjoyed myself greatly looking at everyone’s pants. It was when I was really starting to get into the swing of things that fate took hold and a man walking near to me, speaking in an Australian accent into a phone, said “Yeah sorry about that, I had to buy a new pair of pants.” To which I thought, these pants are definitely what I am here to observe.

Cue several minutes of dancing around the man trying to view said pants from all angles, without seeming too obvious.

I was lucky to get this picture as immediately after taking it, my battery died.

- smaller

These are definitely pants.

These are definitely pants.

On second thought, i was probably walking far too close to this man.

Size R for Regular!

How can I be certain he was wearing the new pants? Because he left the size tag sticker still on.

I love when people do an exceptional and witty job on the smaller tasks!

Wow, cool that you were able to confirm that the subject considered the clothing object to be pants.
