RAoK/SAoB: the Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty Task 1 by October
January 8th, 2008 6:07 PM
I decided on a whim that Sunday (1/6/08) was the perfect day to finish this task. My friend Angie and I put her baby in the car (because people like babies as much as they like flowers) and headed off to Kemah, Texas, with a dozen roses and two dozen carnations from my local flower market/greenhouse. (In retrospect, I wish I had taken a picture of the flower market, but it was so busy!)
Our criteria for the bestowing of flowers:
-- Any lonely, bored boardwalk employees
-- Any person who spoke to Gavin (the baby)
I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted, because the boardwalk was really crowded, it was hard to hear, and thus hard to ask "Can I take your picture with the flower?" more than half a dozen times. A couple of the photos I took of the employees to whom we gave flowers did not turn out well, so they're not here.
I found it interesting that the first question a lot of people would ask was, "Is it free?" Kemah is soooo expensive and sooooo commercial that the idea of someone giving away something for free in that place shocked and delighted a number of people, I think. We got all smiles, except from the lady who was talking on her cell phone. The flower confused her. I wish I'd gotten a photo.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and Angie and I spent a good hour wandering around the boardwalk giving out flowers and people-watching. An enjoyable task, overall.
Flowers for the needy and deserving.

I wish I'd given her a yellow rose instead of a carnation - her sweater sort of swallowed the flower.

The little girl really enjoyed talking to Gavin.

Really nice couple who definitely deserved a flower.

My tired eyes read your first sentence as, "My friend Angie and I put her baby in the car and headed off [walking down the sidewalk]."
Although locking babies in cars while completing RAoK/SAoB has some poetic merit, I'm happy to see the mistake was mine.
Hooray for giving flowers to bored boardwalk employees.
