INSTRUCTIONS: Make clothing out of trash. Simply wearing clothes found in the trash, however, would be rather boring.

As you may have gathered from looking at pictures of me, or from knowing me personally, I have an infatuation with ugly and/or ridiculous clothing. I also enjoy making said items. Therefore, This task immediately appealed to me. The thing that saddened me about the other completions of this task were, though AWESOME, they were undurable and could only be worn a few times before breaking down. I set out to change this.

I have a great fondness of biking in the winter. Stupid? Yes, but that's besides the point.
while biking during the winter, you often find disguarded (intentionally or unintentionally) winter garments. single gloves being the most common, but quite commonly hats, scarves, and other accouterments. Usually I pick them up, wash them and distribute them to friends who I feel fitting for the particular accessory.

My favorite Item to find is scarves, especially if they are plaid. I had found a yellow plaid scarf while biking to rehearsal one night, and a few days later found a red plaid one while rollerskating to breakfast to meet some friends. With this task in my brain and two awesome scarves in my hand, I realized, what would be better then a plaid skirt made of scarves? A plaid box pleated skirt made of scarves with fringe! That's what! If I was going to do this right I was going to do this right, I would also need the closure on the skirt to be found. No just throwing a snap on it, but I was sure something would come in time. Over the next few weeks. My eyes were peeled for lost scarves needing a home. But as it is with anything it's everywhere until you're looking for it. Eventually I came upon their paths. I found a blue knit one on the North Street Beach while doing the Polar Bear Plunge on Jan 1st. I found the black knit one At Armatige and California while biking home one day. and the clasp! the clasp came in form of an old watch face found on Chicago Near the Brown Line. However punching numbers showed me I still needed one more scarf to make the skirt(Box Pleating takes a lot of yardage) And it was getting warmer! Soon I would have to wait for next winter to finish this project, and that was unacceptable. Finally while leaving the Korean Market on Belmont and Kimball I spied a black blob on the road which had potential scarfness about it. I biked over (so excited I almost didn't see the bus about to cross the intersection) and sure enough it was a black polar fleece scarf run over and dirty like the rest, but with a trip in the washing machine, good as new and prime skirt material!

There's the story. Enjoy the pictures.

box pleats take three times as much fabric. That's a lot of straight seams.

Very stylish, and I like how you kept collecting lost scarves. The fringes are great!

Woohoo!
I am charmed by the quote! Cannot imagine a more suitable context for it.
