Document Growth by Pyrtolin

December 1st, 2007 7:17 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document something growing.

I wanted a compromise between something that grew organically (without, in this case, active agency on my part, aside from setting events in motion) and something that I could easily document in a single session. Plants are the most obvious example of the first, would require days or weeks of time to accomplish.

Bread, on the other hand, is a perfect example of intentional growth, and the process of making it is fast enough to easily meet the second requirement. Armed with a camera, bread machine, and a kitchen stocked for the task, I set forth.

(For those to whom the important details matter- the bread in question was a cinnamon-spice bread using light whole wheat flour.)

In the process, I was able to catch the yeast actively proofing around the corners of the unmixed flour both in pictures and video.

Liquid mix.

Liquid mix.

This is our starting point.

Attempting to proof

Attempting to proof

I'd hoped to catch the yeast starting to bubble here, but it wasn't active enough yet.

Flour

Flour

Starting to add the flour. While growth, it's artificial rather than inherent.

Sub-growth

Sub-growth

Not long after adding the last of the flour, the yeast mad itself known. Here's out first evidence of organic growth.

Bubbly Closeup

A closer look at the yeast bubbles.

Sub-sub-growth

Sub-sub-growth

Evidence of growth-because-of-growth-within-growth. The area of bubbles gets larger as evidence of the increasing activity of the yeast.

All corners

All corners

The yeast growth accelerates, and breaks through at all four corners.

Mixing

Mixing

Sub-growth fully documented it's time to proceed with the main event.

Early Dough

Early Dough

Not fully mixed. Taller, but narrower.

Stepping back.

Stepping back.

Sometimes you have to go back to move forward. Now that the dough is fully mixed and being kneaded, it's actually a bit smaller than the lumpy dough in the last step.

The main event

The main event

Enough prelude- the dough begins to rise.

Growth

Growth

Now it fills the pan

Bigger

Bigger

The pan is not sufficient to contain the growing loaf.

Biggest

Biggest

This was the largest point. Not only the pan, but the machine was reaching its limit. I gently delfated the top here so that it would cook properly, and it never reached a larger size.

Thorough documentation, and I quite like the thought that went into your choice of subject.

Welcome to the game. (You've arrived right at the start of a much anticipated inter-group war, so don't worry too much about anything weird or hostile you encounter. Weird is normal around here. Hostile is not.)

Excellent work, sir. The people must have bread!

Have you ever considered capturing your own Starter?

Excellent documentation

This rocks for a first task. Welcome to the game!

Thanks to both. I've had few false starts but now have a couple lined up that look promising.

I've seen the strains of war (in particular the call to war against my group) and am full and well ready to play it through.

I've actually made my own once before, then ran out of time to care for it. I'm going to try again within the next month or so, but it looks like I could only get credit for it by serving in an advisory role to a Biome. I'm going to making some quarg as well for holiday baking, so I could probably assist on a cheese making task as well. (But would imagine that it would, again, be most appropriate to Biome as a mainstay)

If we can find the SF strain here in Pittsburgh, I think we'll tranced the concept of score. I'm counting more on just getting

Thanks for giving me the full set of other groups :)

For cinnamon-spice and voice documentation of those two other growth subjects, on top of the sacredness of baking as a task, and the way yeast have played a role on averting many more than one humanitarian crisis. Cheers!
