Sign Recontextualisation by Rather Dashing, Killah Diamonds, Crazy Child

February 23rd, 2008 7:36 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take a sign (the more permanent/authoritative it looks the better) and install it in a place that changes the sign's original meaning or intent.

La Costa: "The Coast"

So, Killah Diamonds had, years ago, stolen a street sign which labelled a street named "La Costa Lane" somewhere in Georgia.

What did we do? We headed out to the coast on a road trip, just to use this stolen sign to label the real coast effectively! We decided this, of course, spontaneously, at 11:30 pm on Friday, February 22nd. After gathering some supplies (Our typewriters, lots of music, snacks, a ukulele, some layers of clothing, sheets, blankets, a balloon representing the spirit of Crazy Child, and a tripod) we were off!

The trip was almost 4 hours one way, and the whole deal took us about 12 hours altogether.  We got lost a few times, and during which times we talked to Crazy Child, who used her mad interweb skills to set us back on the right path. That, and the fact that she called to check in on us every half an hour or so, makes her a distinct member of the team!

So, upon arrival, we stuck the La Costa sign in the sand and did some happy jumps, and then spent the day wandering around and exploring wilmington, and taking pictures of the beach. It was nothing short of glorious.

The middle yellow number is a poncho. But this was half of our backseat, before the snack shopping. To the right is the balloon containing Val's (Crazy Child's) Spirit! She was with us in spirit, and on the phone when we got lost. All the way from Canada, no less.

I found this sugar cookie in a gas station on the way, and I felt i had to rescue it. Yes, it is Jack Sparrow, yes, that is what should be his left eye. I'll never eat this. It's such a souvenir now...

Excellent!
I utterly despise streets that abuse appealing names!!!

I believe that should be "Captian" Jack Sparrow. But awesomeness all the way!
