Night Photography by Le Renard Rouge

March 16th, 2008 9:23 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Explore your neighborhood in deepest, darkest night.

Share photographs and other impressions of your exploration.

Night time exploration called to me. I always stay up far too late for my own good, so this task seemed to fit.

The world is different at night. It looks different. It sounds different. It smells and tastes and feels different.

You notice things you never see during the bustle to class and meetings. Beauty is all around, waiting to be beheld, and for some inexplicable reason, a lack of natural light brings it out in the best possible manner.

These photos were taken between 3:30 and 4:20 a.m. on a subzero Sunday morning.

May they affect you the same way that morning affected me.

Reflection

Reflection

Tons of bikes, even more reflectors.

Ivy window

Ivy window

This ivy-ravaged building looked like it was at war with nature, and the orange lights inside made it appear as if there was a fire going on in there.

Leaflets all 'round

Leaflets all 'round

One of our many posting cement round things. And yes, that is Barack Obama in a leprechaun suit.

Spook

Spook

The law quad was especially eerie at night, half the lights were on, half off, and the building seemed to heave and breathe.

South U

South U

One of the busiest streets in Ann Arbor, completely and utterly desolate.

Hydrant fun

Hydrant fun

I never though of fire hydrants as canvases for art. I'm not complaining.

Ooooo

Ooooo

A construction site I walked past had this tube running into it that had a crazy green glow. 'Twas as if Flubber and "James and the Giant Peach" crocodile tongues were having a convention.

V

V

I repeatedly ran into these "V for Vendetta" signs, which seemed to have no rhyme or reason. Not very effective, if you ask me.

Construction

Construction

Kudos to the construction company for having the most well-lit area in the city. I guess no one will be injured while working by lack of visibility at 4 a.m. Thank goodness for that.

Walkway

Walkway

This temporary walkway was strewn with immature attempts at graffiti, and of course a few renditions of male genitalia.

Eh?

Eh?

This commemoration confounded me. What is it? A fat, short cannon? A frog with a massive mouth and no legs? Who knows?

Hat

Hat

St. Pattie's Day apparently took its toll on this hat. Poor thing.

Oh say can you see...

Oh say can you see...

The flag was flapping a whole bunch but not making any noise, and the lighting made it very grandiose and impressive. It's a shame that our banner has come to represent such turmoil and terrible decisions to so many people. What are we coming to?

Scratching

Scratching

This greenhouse-esque thing had lots of engravings of "John loves Mary" and the like. It's actually like reading a story if you regard it long enough.

Epic

Epic

This building around the law quad was especially impressive - I really couldn't capture the emotion of it in a picture. The white light cast onto the building made it look as it it was in a spotlight, and the odd orange glow coming from within had a medieval feel. You should check it out sometime.

Sinister

Sinister

These quasi tree branches reminded me of the thorny forest from "Sleeping Beauty."

Dormez-Vous

Dormez-Vous

Some lights just never go out. I guess some sections never truly sleep.

Fancy!

Fancy!

I had never noticed this before. The classical theme appealed to me so badly, I had to drink from all three spouts.

Backstreet

Backstreet

A typical alley. Garbage cans, dim lighting, and puddles.

Well done

Well done

This is actually a parking garage near a classroom complex. I stood right next to it and shot a picture pretty much straight up. The horizontal lines are the stories of the lot, and those metal rectangles are an artistic attempt at guardrails of sorts.

Mud

Mud

I almost stepped in this puddle. The vehicle's trail was only 4 hours old, but I had things to attend to.

Ultimate frisbee?

Ultimate frisbee?

Crazy banister on a patio. Close to lined up bubble blowing wands

Lights

Lights

During the day, one doesn't realize how many lights there are, but at night, these luminescent orbs were everywhere, dozens upon dozens, identical in every way and pathetic for being so.

Fire

Fire

I had no idea that firefighters had their own public speaker system! It's probably to boost morale with the sound of music.

Poubelle

Poubelle

There were a lot of trash receptacles.

Wear Me!

Wear Me!

Window shopping takes on a whole new role when it's night. These shirts want to be worn so badly, they will ooze out of the dresser and clothe you!

Arch

Arch

The second best luminated area I found. It seems like it called me to walk through it. So I did.

Sk8er

Sk8er

So I was about to cross the street, but then I realized I needed a board to be able to, so I didn't. I had to find a non-skateboard-only walkway further down the street, much to my inconvenience.

Welcome

Welcome

Monolithic isn't it? I actually stopped in my tracks when I saw the lighting effects on the pillars. Truly breathtaking.

Hedge

Hedge

Bushes receding, starring broken plastic cup.

Steps

Steps

That is some of the finest caulk I have ever seen.

Oh no!

Oh no!

This was the only streetlight that wasn't on during my foray. Think of the countless injuries that could be caused by such carelessness! I'm currently pressing charges.

Pillars II

Pillars II

Another interesting piller ornamented building. The lighting is what did it for me. Very Mount Olympus.

I can't wait

I can't wait

Hey kids, let's all go to the Renovation and Addition Project. Yaaayyyy!!!

Mmmm

Mmmm

This is the point that night when I realized that there WAS a God.

Receding

Receding

Yay for vanishing points.

Diversity

Diversity

A brown brick in a red brick's world. Hang in there big guy.

Cha-Ching

Cha-Ching

I was a trifle freaked out because this guy seemed to be following me, but all he was doing was taking advantage of the 10 cent can and bottle refund we have in our fine state.

Ding-Dong

Ding-Dong

The epitome of belltower glory! Quasimodo anyone?

Definitely loving the nocturnal look of AA through the eye of your camera. "IS THAT WHAY THEY SAY?"

Haha yeah, i left without my wallet and I didn't want to barter with my camera. So nothing. I hear that they're a bit rediculously priced also.
