Time-Warp Transaction by Robert Burt

February 20th, 2008 10:43 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Return an item to a store that you didn't purchase there. With the money/credit, purchase that item.

So let me fill you all in on the details. Back on February 11th I had a report due on a play that we had to read for my Acting class. I remembered February 10th and we were in Pleasant Hill, so I purchased a copy of David Mamet's Oleanna at Barnes and Noble and read it and wrote the report and handed it in the next day. First thing I have to say, Mamet is an effing genius, flipping amazing the way he can reproduce human speech patterns so accurately, its scary. In fact, it made the play incredibly hard to read. It was that good.

Now for the task. I was going to return the book back to the Barnes and Noble in my area, where it was not purchased. This was the scary/potentially illegal bit. Returning a book to somewhere it wasn't bought. I figured its Barnes and Noble though, all the same. So thats what I did. I walked up to the help desk and asked the lady where I can return books so she said the front desk, which is where I went next. I returned the book and got back exactly 13 dollars for it (the book itself cost 12.99, but the lady just didn't care about the extra penny and gave me a dollar). This is where I got extremely nervous. Rebuying the item. There was just no way I could go back and buy it from that same lady. I didn't quite have the courage to be looked at like that so suspiciously. My non-player friends recording the whole thing on my cellphone egged me on, but then reminded me I could always buy the book at the back counter in the Music section, so I settled on that (to be honest, I was scared of going back to the front. Watch the third video and listen).

Here's the lame part. I lost money. I figured since the lady gave me exactly 13 dollars I would walk out with the play and an extra penny. Revenue! However, when they rung it up, it came to 14.02. Don't quite know what happened. And 14.02 is quite steep for a play script.

Special thanks to my non-player friends behind the camera.

Oh and a note to others setting off to do this task. Do it as pair. One return it, one buy it back. That might work better. Or if you're way more badass than I am, do it the man way, and buy it back from the same person.

"He's really serious about getting it," referring to my periodic table shirt and the said tattoo of it I want across my back. The cashier lady was funny.

Hehehehe, very well done.

"... it ended up costing 14.02, so I lost, like, 2 bucks!"

What´s the worst that could have happened?

Vote for the sweetness of being so nervous about it and, yes, like two bucks. Oleanna kicks ass. You could have use that as the reason for rebuying it, if they asked. Most likely, they wouldn´t even ask, just give you the evil eye...
There was just no way I could go back and buy it from that same lady.

Did you need a receipt? Did they just hand you 13 dollars? If they just handed you $13 without a receipt, then that is ridiculous. If you used a receipt, it is almost like buying it where you bought it, but the fact that you lost made money and then lost money on the whole thing was pretty awesome. Thanks for completing my task!

Barnes and Noble's current return policy doesn't require a receipt, however they're changing it on March 3rd. So, there you have it.

The new policy requires a receipt and return within 14 days.

i can't believe you don't need a receipt. i feel like before march 3rd i should just walk in, find an expensive book on the shelf, and then walk up to the counter to return it. crazy. anyway, good job. :)

I have a little slip of paper on it that has the details. Also, you made the task saying that it had to be returned to a different store, so wouldn't that mean not having a receipt?
