Slow Motion Minutes by Shea Wolfe

January 18th, 2008 2:10 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take a few minutes out of every hour for one day to do everything in slow motion.

This task was hard! Not only would I get distracted and nearly miss my time each hour, but my body seemed to want no part of this crazy slow motion thing. A short list of what I discovered in the order that I discovered them.

1. You slow down, but only within a small personal bubble. The world won't change.
2. After each few minutes of slow motion everything seems very fast for a short while. In fact, I think the body (or the mind) overcompensates a little and you end of doing things faster than normal for a little while.
3. Force is hard to apply in slow motion. Due to this I couldn't open a door (they are push doors, without knobs)
4. Slow motion tends to produce jerky movements in the human body.
5. The finer a movement is, the harder it is to perform in slow motion. Your fingers, for example, are not good a moving slowly, and take some work to get moving at the correct speed. I found it was easier just to move my entire arm and not risk the speedy move.
6. Despite best efforts, I couldn't slow my internal processes. Looking back this is a good thing as I really like it when enough blood (with enough oxygen) gets to my brain. Besides, external is hard enough.
7. Time seems to speed up. When I looked at my watch it looked like it was moving really fast. Strange but true. Also, I noticed that time, for me, seems to be measued in action length, so getting something out of the fridge takes say 15 seconds. Therefore, doing the same action in slo-mo actually seems to speed up time because the action takes longer. Try it out!
8. Talking isn't worth the effort. You sould silly and get strange looks, I avoided it.
9. People are perfectly willing to let you have your bubble as long as you don't affect them.
10. Technology doesn't like slow motion. I had to wait until I was back at full speed before I could use a computor due to the inability to double click fast enough.
11. You become incredibly aware of just what you do with your body when you are in slow motion because you have to keep track of everything to make sure it isn't moving too fast. This leads to interesting observations like what your left hand does while your right hand holds a phone or uses a mouse.
12. reflexes are really hard to beat, and not just the knee-jerk ones either. When I was outside and snot started running from my nose I was gonna wipe it, slo-mo or not. Also works with itches.
13. Not specific to the slow motion, but when you note something every hour, you notice just what you do with your day. For me this lead to the need to derive, as I had done nothing but sit around all day.

In terms of what I did in slow motion, it really depended on where I was. Normal activities included standing up from the couch, which tells you real qucik what muscles standing up employs, walking, and climbing stairs. I found my arms the most awkward part of the slow motion because I wanted to know what to do with them but consciously have no idea what I do with my arms.

Mindful slo-mo ing could be a class at the community center

The analysis is so thorough and cool! I want to do it now. Thanks!

That sounds a lot more interesting to do than I would have guessed.

It really wasn't all that interesting though, that was the problem. I was just sitting around every time it came up so I resolved to see what else I could discover.

Dude, if I knew you cold just talk about what you noticed when going slow motion I would have done it already.
I totally noticed a lot of what you said.
Though the talking part... Oh yeah, I talked. It was fun.
People either thought I was retarded or laughed at me. Or both. Cruel world.
I only did it for half a day, though, so I have to start over.
