Super Vote by Spidere

October 19th, 2007 6:24 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Reward a player with a personalized super vote by delivering them a real world gift in the mode of your group's trajectory of desire that expresses your appreciation and astonishment at one of their SF0 task completions.

Perhaps use the post, or if you prefer, the tristero.

Like many of you, I'm sure, I kept seeing the amazing and wonderful portraits coming up under the What is advertising? task, and just kept wanting to click that vote button again. The first time was purely for personal gain (I wanted a picture), but I felt it deserved even more, for the really amazing pictures coming out of it. As I was trying to figure out what to do, BlueberryMarscapone pointed out I could make a vote. A Super Vote.

No...no, not a Super Vote.

A Super...Villain Vote.

I thought some motivational villain posters would be appropriate, to help inspire the Villain to greater acts of Villainy. So I included two 8x10 framed Inspirational Posters for Supervillains, which I rather like.

The wrapping for this was crucial, and I think came out really well. It's made from a collection of supervillains (Lex Luthor gets top billing of course, but Doctor Doom, the Joker, Magneto, and many, many others also appeared). These were taken from actual comics (cutting up the comic books might have been the hardest part for me to do) and taped together to create the wrapping paper. I really like the look of it.

Wrapped

But the heart of the vote (for me), the part I actually thought of first, was saved for last. You see, it was the Villain who really helped me see the SF0 community--I've been really impressed with the way he's managed to weave an ongoing community narrative into his task completions. In particular, the comic art in A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words was a great way to work together SF0 characters, and a beautiful work to boot. So it seemed like this would be appropriate. "Understanding Comics" is a great work trying to analyze what makes graphic storytelling work. I've been a huge fan ever since it came out--I think it does an amazing job of going through so much of visual storytelling. I hope the Villain enjoys it. A few years back, I had the pleasure of meeting Scott McCloud when we hosted him at Vericon, and was able to get him to sign a copy.

The copy I sent to the Villain is this one--my own, personal, signed copy.

I'm glad to be your foe, Villain. Thank you.

The contents kept shifting and threatening to tear their way out of the villainous wrapping; they had to be restrained with zipties.

A nice big splash page made the back a little easier, but the sides were tricky the whole way through. The Joker, Gorilla Grodd, Cheetah, Dr. Light, and Galactus (and Doom again) down at the bottom.

Arrival!

I got a note today from the Villain saying he received it, which gave me a double mental backflip of joy, both because he likes ('Superfantastic' is an excellent adjective :) and because it did in fact make it to him. I've been on pins and needles waiting for the package to arrive, all through the Villain extravaganza revolution.
Tracking link, for anyone who wants to see the sordid saga of the parcel's perilous progress.
Many thanks to my secret ally for providing the Villain's location!

I have gotten some incredible things in the mail recently.

This one takes the cake.

Firstly, because I had to cart myself all the way across town to pick it up from the UPS headquarters because the package was apparently declared too precious to leave on my doorstep.

Secondly, because unwrapping the web of Villains protecting the package was a Villainesque puzzle in itself, which was a vehemently harrowing task on this end... but so, so worth the trouble of not tearing a single Villain.

Thirdly, because you framed the damn inspirational posters!

Fourth, because I have been dying for a copy of Understanding Comics ever since a college professor recommended it to me as academic reading.

And here is a photograph of me having the sudden shock of discovering that this is a personalized, signed copy of this infamous book.

Spidere, you have tread on dangerous ground by singling yourself out from the crowd of Players like this. Be warned. There is no going back once you have stepped into the Meta-Narrative!

Mwa ha ha ha ha ah aah ah ahh!
