100 words by Stone Saints

June 30th, 2006 5:41 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Cut 100 individual words out of different newspapers and magazines or whatever print source you like. Assemble them into some sort of story or poem or such. Try to choose words that call out to you and try not to plan out what your story will be ahead of time. Create a little book for you to paste your story words into.

This took a lot longer than I though it would--but it was fun. And the results surprised me. I wasn't very good about cutting out those small but necessary words, such as "and", "to", "as", etc... But hopefully you'll agree that the words I did choose ended up coming together in some semblance of sense. Oh, and I did stretch the guidelines a bit: I cut out 100 slips, but some of them contain phrases rather than single words. Still, I think it's in the spirit of the task.
