Free Food Diet by Frostbeard

INSTRUCTIONS: Survive for a day eating only free food.

Unfortunately these days this task seemed all too easy. I am living at home for a stint with my parents, and therefore a lot of the food i consume when here is free. Figuring that this is therefore not nearly as difficult as it should be, i decided to eat "free" food in two senses. First, everything i ate was free. Freely offered and freely taken but free to me monetarily. Secondly, i decided, being an omnivore living in a house where Polish cooking is prominent and a meal isn't a meal without meat (silly of course), i decided that another facet of my "free" food day was going to be animal free.

So free food that is also vegan. This made breakfast a little difficult given that the breakfast-type options that i might normally consume were out. Instead i ended up with some sort of amalgamated potato hash in tomato sauce thing. It ended up being pretty good, but a bit strange.

Next, after tasking a bit i went to a friend's house. Eventually once i was there for a while i was offered some trail mix and some grapes. I stayed through until dinner, and was therefore fed for free again. The meal consisted of some vegetables cooked together, a pretty tasty cabbage dish, and fried polenta.

My downfall almost came after dinner during a board game. My friend's father opened a Left Hand Milk Stout, one of my favorite beers and poured some for himself and his son. As i sat there, i picked up his glass for a sip, looked down, smelled it, and put it back down. I had just averted complete tasking disaster!

One potato, two potato

One potato, two potato

Yup. I didn't eat the cat food though.

You say potato, i say grate it.

You say potato, i say grate it.

The beginnings of some sort of grated potato hash thing.

Onion

Onion

I liked the weird flying skirt thing i made with this onion. I ate some too.

Oil not butter

Oil not butter

Usually my breakfast is eggs. And usually in butter. Here i'm using olive oil.

Mush

Mush

Here is some grated potato mush with onions and paprika. No animals.

Pepper

Pepper

I smashed it. Then added it.

Right...tomatoes....what?

Right...tomatoes....what?

So, this is where breakfast got weird. Usually when i make this kind of thing for breakfast i use a liquid with a fair amount of protein to emulsify all of the ingredients together into something coherent. I didn't have soy milk, and wasn't using regular milk, so i decided to just throw in stewed tomatoes as a unifying liquid.

Lemon juice?

Lemon juice?

Ya, well, with the tomato i thought something needed to blend that flavor into the other stuff. So, lemon juice.

Herbs de Provence

Herbs de Provence

For flavor.

Breakfast.

Breakfast.

Looks kind of disgusting maybe. Like some sort of fish thing or something. But it's not. It's potatoes and stuff. Tasted pretty ok actually.

Later

Later

Snack time. Got this handful from a friend. The chocolate has no milk.

Snack2

Also from a friend. Grapes. For free! yay!

It's an interpretation of the task, sure, but surely that means that every single piece of food in people's refrigerators is *technically* free.

I pay for the food in my fridge. That's how it gets there.

But you don't have to pay for it to come out of the fridge, do you?

Unless you have a really awesome fridge that requires you to do so. Or a fridge butler of some sort.

Ya well, if you think about it, really no food is free. It all has social, economic, environmental, and energy costs. So, i supposed the whole task is sort of bogus unless you take some creative interpretation.

And, what was the problem with the beer, again?

Food bank food is free.
Stolen food is free.
Food that grows in your garden is free.
Pie-eating contests food is free.
Oscar´s parties food is free.
Holy bread in church is free food too.
Food from your parent´s fridge is boring.

Food found in bins is free.

Probably a bit odd tasting though.

And of course, you could always find mushrooms and eat them.

I think the beer issue is that milk stout is non-vegan, and thus would violate the animal-free spin for this completion.

Ink Tea votes for vegans.

I could shplank this task ten times over, everyday; horribly unemployed student ftw.

Ya, the problem with the milk stout for this task was that it is in fact not vegan due to lactose sugars added to the beer, derived from milk.

IS food bank food free? Who pays for that food? Does it just materialize at the food bank?

And if the food is stolen, it still costs the person you stole it from something. Garden food comes from seeds that you weren't born holding...you had to get them from somewhere, not to mention the time, energy, space, possible fertilizer, water, etc. that goes into that.

Holy food from church costs the church, and pie eating contest food comes from somewhere as well. The whole idea of this task is absurd.

Hence the animal-free part at least being an attempt to make it "free" of something. The real problem is that no food is free, ever, and thinking that it magically comes from no where is some well-off "western" concept that doesn't make any sense really.

Plus, you can always just flag it. :) I've eaten plenty of food out of trash bins, off other people's tables in restaurants...i even went to a blood drive for free food when i had no money and was stuck in boston. So, i could post all of that stuff now retroactively, or i could attempt to do what i could with it now.

Vote for controversy. For the record, I dig the interpretation. Half the fun of sf0 is putting your own spin on the tasks, especially when they're as vague as this one. If the creator of the task wanted you to get more specific, they could have made the task more specific.

Kudos.
