Up and Up and... Up by Frostbeard

January 8th, 2008 4:20 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Climb a structure at least thirty feet in height.

Humanitarian Crisis participants must wave a flag reading: FREEDOM

So, i set up a show this morning for Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie, and have to go back tonight to break it down. When one is doing this stagehand thing, one usually doesn't know when one is going to be done, so i planned on doing this task in-between set-up and take-down for the sake of saving time and gas. I ended up getting out of the set-up really early, so this allowed me to be doing this in the middle of the day.

This task is paired with Urban Exploration 1, and therefore the parts leading up to the climb, and what happened after the climb are left to that post.

This is an (i presumed) abandoned factory in Worcester, MA. For the UE1 task i had to get into the building, and decided to climb the building as a way to get in, which of course completes this task.

There was a bit of adventure in getting here, check it out at the UE1 task.

The Factory Building

The Factory Building

It is tall. It is near these railroad tracks. It was a bitch to climb up there. The roof can be seen by people from a nearby workplace of some sort. Annoying.

Tree of Wisdun (Un-Wisdom)

Tree of Wisdun (Un-Wisdom)

Don't try this at home if your home is an abandoned rotting factory. I decided that with the help of this TREE(TM) i could get up near all that fire escape junk and climb up this building. Sometimes i question the wisdom of my actions.

Ropes!

Ropes!

Ya, someone left these sweet ropes here to make my climbing easy. And by "someone left these ropes" i of course mean that these unstable, swinging, probably held on at the top by mere twigs vines grew here. Anyway, i did the Tarzan thing. Where's my Jane?

Again, from the top!

Again, from the top!

So, here's the top looking down. Great, it looks like 5 feet, but it is actually quite tall. I recently lost like 20 lbs. and i swear it must have all been muscle. This was like reliving elementary school when i couldn't climb the "girl" rope with knots in it, never mind the big "boy" rope. Sexist gym teachers. Anyway, halfway up the lens cap of my camera came off, so i had to climb back down and back up again. Totally lame.

The top, with tracks.

The top, with tracks.

Some railroad tracks. The same railroad tracks i took to get here.

What's that building over there?

What's that building over there?

It's made of stone and looks like some old English farmhouse/barn thing. It's probably filled with aweful chemicals. I find out later what's in there in my UE1 deal. Anyway, i climbed it, see? Oh, and those stairs over there only go down to a sub-roof. Not helpful. Also not helpful were the bunches of guys in construction-type outfits who i swear must've seen me that i kept seeing down below on the nearest street.

Down, down, down in that burning ring of fire.

Down, down, down in that burning ring of fire.

Ok, so no fire. But, i almost jumped from the roof under those shoddy stairs to the other lower roof. From this perspective one can see that the little building thing is made out of brick and is probably nice and stable. From the top it looks like i'd do a cartoonish dive through the roof, ended in bones jutting out of my flesh. Instead i opted to climb from that precariously hanging pipe down to that little weird greenish box thing, then to that window in between the brick and other building thing, and then dropped to the ground. Ninja-style. Except without the black costume. Oh, and without the stealth that allows me to evade construction worker guys. I swore they were after me. Luckily, i was wrong.

I figured that with climbing stuff, the physical route is the important part. It's where the individual interacts where the environment and becomes quite dependent on the environment. So, i tried to get the route in to give a sense of the experience.
