Plasterboard to Gorleston by Vena Nightmare

INSTRUCTIONS: Find the oddest, loudest, largest, funniest or most-awkward object you can and take it on a public bus.

Just so it's made clear: I'd like to publicly say that this totally didn't happen, I do not have the object in question, and have never even seen it in my life. Okay. Yup.

This past election I volunteered for a campaign. On election day we had quite a lot of parties (we won) and at the second one I was talking to a guy and standing next to this sign.

Out of tiredness, I'd been manning the phone and knocking on doors all day, I said in jest, "Man, I kinds wanna steal that sign right now."

The guy I was with, to my surprise, agreed and offered to serve as the get-away car. After a few minutes of debate, and waiting for the party to wind down, we set out to relieve the party of their sign (which surely would be a hindrance to them later due to it's time sensitive nature...?).

He left to get the car and wait out front. I was to exit five minutes later but before I could make my move, I was engaged in conversation with a passing party-goer. I conversed politely for as long as I felt necessary to not seem rude, and then make my excuses. Unfortunately, I had to take the sign right there while he watched me! I made some excuse: "Man, I have to get this sign- they told me to get it- what a drag..." and strolled calmly out.

I can't believe no one stopped me. I felt for sure there was a giant sign-... Well actually yes, there was a giant sign. I was carrying it. Anyway, I made it to the car, it was a bit of a struggle getting it into the car, and the guy complemented my 'act natural' suave.

He drove me back to the parking lot outside of the first party and said goodbye (after first getting my e-mail, we've gone out for coffee once so far). I drove my car back to my school parking lot and then there it was.

I had to take the school shuttle back to my dorm, carrying this giant sign, at 12:30 am.

Welp.

I anticipated this being much more of a problem than it actually was. Apparently, people who take the bus in the early hours of the morning- they don't really bat an eye at that sort of thing.

Of course, without the story behind it- it doesn't seem all that sinister or anything. Even the people in my dorm were more concerned that I was awake at that hour (because I go to bed at the totally unreasonable hour of 11:30) then the sign I was carrying. Or maybe some things are only awkward if you make them so ("Act natural! Act natural!").

Hm, that might make a good task- respond to something mundane as if it were very much out of the ordinary, cause others to feel the same way...?

(I do want to say that when I first saw this task, I asked my roommate if I could practice picking her up...)

As a side note, my dorm room is so small that the sign is currently tucked between my closet and bed., I'll probably have to take it home during break (they search people's rooms for contraband) but I don't know how I would explain that to my mother....

I had someone hold it to have a reference for its size.

I should say- I have never seen a signpost like that anywhere (THE IMAGE IS A LIE, or something)

Too bad it wouldn't have worked (she was afraid of the height that was my shoulder, and I couldn't lift her for more than a moment...)

I knew that having a sign when doing public tasking reassures people that you're okay. But I didn't realize that merely carrying a random sign around also causes people to not take notice of the unusual sign carrying behavior itself. Interesting.
