The naming of a ferret

Warning: copious backstory and navel-gazing ahead

Everything has a beginning. Everyone has several. This is one of my beginnings.

January 2002 was when I joined the internet. Like many things so vast and life-changing, at first I hadn't grokked how important it was. I would sit there, on the homepage of this up-and-coming search engine, and wonder, what the hell do I do now?

One of my first stops was a webcomic, which a friend had recommended to me. That link above? That's the first Sluggy strip I remember reading. I read through the archive then, day after day, until I'd caught up with everything. And then I joined the forums.

Sluggy Freelance's fan forums are where my formative years were spent. I made a number of friends there - in fact, almost all of the folks I know online these days, are somehow connected to Sluggy Freelance. After a while, I left. Thing were growing stale, and the people who were joining were all faceless fanboys.

But I still retained fond memories of the place. So when a Kiki plush toy came up for auction on our equivalent of eBay, I had to purchase it. And as a result, I've had a plush ferret hanging around my desk for the past four or so years.

Has this ferret been a Kiki? Not really. Things generate names. My ferret has remained nameless up until now. My ferret is now called Yourself.
