November 26th, 2007 2:23 PMUsually I ride the Muni, because it gets me to and from work faster, but on bright beautiful days I prefer to sit in your lozenge shaped body and admire the wood work and read the signs in Italian. Some would call the street car system a folly. I call it inspired. You may be slow, and infrequent, but the fact that in order to move, the driver has to use very complicated systems of levers, buttons, foot pedals, voodoo and magical bells makes me love you even more. My favourite car is the open roof Blackpool one, which when it makes its rare appearance always entices me to get on it not matter what I am doing. Thank you San Francisco for employing these wonderful relics, and letting me take the slower but more emotionally gratifying way home.
An avid rider
I was going to do a street corner, but then I remembered the street cars and how much I love them. I did a drawing of the blackpool car, photocopied both the letter and the drawing and shrunk them down together so that now they are on a 2 x 2 inch piece of paper, which I then laminated with packing tape. There are 10 in total, each marked as one of 10, with just a simple SF0 on the back. . My plan is to leave all ten of them on different street cars and bus stops, culminating in leaving 1/10 on the shy and elusive Blackpool car.

That would be one of the letters viewed from the outside of one of the Italian cars

This was a green and white one, I can't remember which one though. A woman really rudely sat down next to me with great vigor. I love being in the back of the bus!!

I will be taking the cable car home everyday this week, so there will be 7 more cable cars labeled this way if all goes well.
Yeah, I used to take the F car to work, all the way from the Embarcadero to Pier 39. The Blackpool was always my favorite, too. Days I'd ride it and get to work, glowing with joy at the memory of the wind in my hair. I'd try to explain to coworkers who were looking at me strangely, and they;d just look at me more strangely, still. I guess some people just have sick, numb souls.
Thanks for spreading the joy.
That's a great drawing. I'd like to see the message on some real cable cars!
