Something Fishy by The Beekeeper

October 25th, 2008 1:16 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Go fishing for something that is not fish.

As a resident of the tenderloin district in San Francisco, cockroaches have long been acknowledged as household critters. This is not an indication that I live in squalor, mind you, so much as it is an indication of an ongoing infestation which as far as I've heard is a necessary condition of the cheap rent. So, we resent the little buggers for scurrying around our apartments, kill the one we can catch and just complain about the rest.

With these particular critters in mind, I read this task and decided that fishing for cockroaches is a skill which i've long needed improvement. To begin conceptualizing, how exactly one fishes for cockroaches I began to make a list of situations and specific locations where I could recall their overwhelming presence. The Kitchen quickly became the obvious location and as for the bait, who doesn't love chocolate cake?

Instead of using my own kitchen, baking a delicious chocolate cake, and setting it on the floor I decided to take an alternative approach. I would build a kitchen and construct a chocolate cake to proper cockroach scale. main_img297470212.jpg As for the fishing, I would use the ole "box propped up by a stick tied to a string" bit with the perfect compliment to a chocolate cake, a mini-cockroach sized glass of milk. main_img295070203.jpg Please note the picture on the wall of a cockroach taking a picture of himself- this is to make our sneaky interlopers feel right at home, increasing our chances of a capture.

I created the kitchen, set the trap and began waiting.main_img295170204.jpg

Much to my chagrin despite of 2 days of waiting, I was only able capture 1 visitor. I was able to document the visit of a very small baby cockroach which crawled across the wall, went for the chocolate cake, but failed to take an interest in the milk. My theory is he is lactose intolerant, perhaps a cup of soy milk might do the trick, next time.main_img293770199.jpgPlease Note: Cockroaches are most prevalent in the summer, so this is not exactly good cockroach fishing season. Check out the pictures below!

A special thanks goes out to Andy for his help and patience with this praxis.

Admittedly-tiny vote for not catching any, because for whatever reason I couldn't stop myself from looking at all the pics - and success probably would have creeped me the hell out. One of the things I absolutely love about Minnesota is that unlike here, it mostly doesn't get the damn things.

Task says "go fishing," not "go catching."

I really like this. A somewhat belated welcome to the game, Beekeeper.

Hahahaha...

Thank you for making me laugh.

You alone are getting the majority of my points today....

Odd that although you scaled the kitchen and cake down to cockroach size, you were visited by a tiny one that almost seemed the normal size in for a cockroach relationship to the kitchen...
