The Fast by avidd opolis

August 8th, 2006 10:55 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Fast for at least 24 hours.

Begin your fast by first having a meal. Document this meal, the particulars of its flavor and components. Then begin your fast. During this time you can partake of naught but water. Don't stay away from food, that would make it easy; go out to meals with friends, cook for loved ones, but abstain from eating.

Note the use of food as a social device, and as pure necessity. Note how it affects the plans we make and the schedules we keep. Reflect on what portions of our lives are devoted to the preparation, processing and procuring of food. Document every time you were tempted to eat, and why.

In the end, break your fast with the same meal you began with. How was it different?

The fast was a lot more difficult than I expected.

I ate my last meal around 10pm Sunday. Since i was exhausted from a day of motorcycling and not too hungry, i microwaved some trader joe's potstickers and downed them with a glass of OJ and soda water.

The last meal experience:
Ok ok, I was hungry. I didn't microwave them long enough, and the second one I ate was cold in the center. I put the bowl back in the microwave. Now the pot stickers are scalding hot and i'm burning the roof of my mouth. They taste okay with a little soy sauce, but would be better pan-fried. The OJ totally doesn't go with the flavor of the potstickers, but whatever. I just don't want to go to bed hungry.

The next day:
I was fine skipping breakfast; i usually do. Right around lunch time however, my stomach kicked in bigtime. I didn't realize i'd grown so soft!
To make it harder on myself, I invited my friend Vlad out to lunch.

Mmmmm, falafel. I'm salivating.
Vlad is a good friend of mine, but since he lives accross the bay I almost never see him except over lunch. I chide him about this all the time.

As Vlad loads up his tray, I look at art on the wall.

We go to a park and have a great conversation about the music he makes, and if the sound of drumming on a human skull would have different meaning based on where the skull came from.

It really was much easier to get conversation in when only one of us was eating. I'll say something while he chews, then he'll say something.

I was still hungry though, and to add insult to injury, i spotted this on the side of his to-go box

Screw you, Virginia Woolf! I beg to differ!

I spent the rest of the day thinking a disproportionate amout about food. When i got home, i reflexively turned into the pantry. Gah!

I started working on electronics, and time flew by. But as soon as it was time, i got out the potstickers and OJ.

Second meal experience:
To keep it real, i made sure to undercook the potstickers again. Yep, the second one was cold in the center. I put the bowl back it. Yep, I burned myself again. I ate them pretty quickly because I wanted to get back to what i was doing. i didn't enjoy them any more than the first time. I guess they're not all that good. Next time I'll choose a better last meal.

conclusion: i need to fast more often. I didn't used to have trouble going without food. i have grown soft and weak. As an SF0 player, I cannot afford that. I will add fasting to my SF0 fittness regiment, which at the moment includes boot camp style calesthenics, knife fighting, urban camoflage, task memorization, and public transit ESP training.
