Irregular Animal Documentation by avidd opolis

June 4th, 2006 11:35 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document an animal you rarely see. Domesticated animals - whether friend, foe, or feral - don't count except in extraordinary circumstances. Beyond that, you're on your honour; in some areas, a squirrel might well be a rare sighting, just as in other areas it's quite common to see munk parakeets (i.e. the pet store kind) perched on telephone wires along Woodlawn Street...

I documented a Great Blue Heron in Golden Gate park!
According to wikipedia:

This is the largest North American heron.
This species usually breeds in colonies in trees close to lakes or other wetlands, often with other species of herons. It builds a bulky stick nest. The female lays 3 to 5 pale blue eggs. Both parents feed the young at the nest by regurgitating food.

It feeds in shallow water or at the water's edge and spears fish or frogs with its long, sharp bill. Its varied diet can also include insects, snakes, turtles, rodents and small birds. It will also raid goldfish ponds in back yards.

The Great Blue stands 132 cm (four feet) tall, has a 213 cm (seven-foot) wingspan and weighs 2.5 kg. It has a long yellow bill. Adults have blue-grey wings and back and a white head with a black cap and a long black plume. In flight, the long neck is held in an S-shape with the long legs trailing behind. This bird flies with strong deliberate wing beats.

I have to vote for this, even though it's pushing you further into the Top Biome Slot.

Damn you and your pretty pictures and research!

My dad once (accidentally) caught a great blue heron while we were fishing in New Hampshire. A beautiful bird that wasn't particularly cooperative with our attempts to de-lure it. Fortunately neither bird nor fishermen were injured in the incident.

Thank you so much! I'm pretty sure this is the enormous, mysterious bird Cameron and I saw while paddle boating in Stowe Lake!

If that bird weighs 2.5 kilograms, I'll eat my hat! Of course I really would like to eat my hat.

Beautiful plumage!
