Qualia Feast by Juliette

May 24th, 2008 7:19 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document, using text and media, the existence of "raw feels" or qualia, instances of the 'what it is like' character of mental states (i.e. pain, seeing red, smelling a rose), that cannot be communicated, or apprehended by any other means than direct experience.

Although I highly enjoy smell, taste, vision, and touch, I decided to attempt to document how hearing something makes me feel. Not my first thought of what to show, but definitely my best choice, was the song Last Caravan by Last Caravan. This song has always reminded me of a sunset. I have an Apple-protected version of it, so it appears I cannot upload the song, but let me show you how it makes me feel:

A google-found image, but it's the perfect sunset for this song, all orange and lovely and textured. And it's over San Francisco! Even more perfect.

Abstract art, but even more accurately portrays how the song makes me feel. It's a loop-style song, meaning it plays the same sequence over and over again with slight if any differences, which is represented by the circles and ovals prevalent throughout the art. It's a very desert-y sounding song to me, so I used warm and dark colors with the image of a desert at sunset in mind. The wave-looking texture is taken directly from the sunset photograph, and it gives the wavy sort of depth that Last Caravan has.

I highly recommend that anyone who likes Spanish-style guitar, deserts, sunsets, music with hidden depths, and/or really good music to cuddle or (ahem) make out to download or buy the Last Caravan CD, or at least this song!
