Try to Yummy by Juliette, Supine ⠮⡽⣪Rocket

June 30th, 2011 2:07 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Be at least two.
Take a food that one player likes but the other one dislikes. Both eat it and try to TASTE it properly.
Then everyone writes down very precisely and detailed what they have tasted and give it to the other player. Discuss it and then eat the same thing again but try to taste it like in the description of the other player.
Document.

Juliette doesn't like cookies-and-cream ice cream. Mitchell does.
Mitchell doesn't like avocado. Juliette does.

main_1avocadoandcook102055.jpgJuliette:
Alright, here's why I don't like cookies-and-cream ice cream: not only are the little oreo-like bits repulsive-tasting (Oreos are just gross), they make delicious, creamy, rich ice cream *gritty*. It's like adding dirt, or maybe sand. Would you like the texture of sand mixed in with your smooth, buttery ice cream? When you eat cookies-and-cream ice cream, that's what it feels like to me. I'm a very texture-oriented, sensual person, so this flavor of ice cream is just really, really icky. But, y'know, I'd like to like it, or at least not hate it so much? That would be cool. So I'm going to try really hard to ignore my previous experience and just eat some cookies-and-cream ice cream.

Supine:
It's a little harder for me to give justification of why I don't like the avocado. I can never pick out just what it is, but when I bite into a piece of avocado, it triggers my gag reflex. There must be some component in the avocado which my body thinks is poisonous. I don't exactly hate the taste of avocado. When it is mixed in with a delicious Sopa de Tortilla, I don't mind its presence. But I have never been able to eat avocado by itself, or foods with large quantities of guacamole in them. This can present a problem on the occasion that my order is mixed-up at a taqueria. And next year, I will be living with a host family in Ecuador, and I don't want to offend them by having trouble with any of the food they serve me. Especially in those first few months when I won't yet be facile with Spanish. To avoid those delicate negotiations required to trade/mooch/give away food, I want to overcome my aversion to avocado. This task shall be the most direct of many attempts to acclimate myself to my dreaded nemesis.

Nice things Juliette said about avocado:
First: just look at it! It's so lovely and green! Avocado color reminds me very much of summertime.
Now you can eat it.
First: it's buttery and cream in your mouth despite being a fruit. This is GREAT.
Next: It's a light, almost delicate flavor.
Next: Salt and pepper hit you. Not the point, but good. Finally: Leaves a soft smooth feeling in your mouth. Also (important!) overall: Avocado is a nutty flavor, which is odd in a fruit, but I find it enjoyable.

Nice things Mitchell said about cookies and cream:
First off, the name seems a little redundant. Cookies and Cream isn't my absolute favorite flavor, but it's still ice cream. My first impression on biting into it is its sweetness. The package says __ grams of sugar. ANYWAY. The best aspect of the Ice cream is the creaminess. [seems like a bit of an obvious thing to say...] It fits, for a flavor which requires you to say "cream" twice. It's cold, it's soft, and it's easy on the palette. Then you get the cookies. Having been in the ice cream for so long, they've become chewy and provide a nice contrast to the sweet cream. They also introduce a new flavor, a little starchy and with a hint of chocolate. This completes the ice cream, makes it hold together. Towards the bottom of the cup, the ice cream has melted, and the flavor is stronger. This triggers for me the warm glow of a dish finished with a little tinge of regret that it's gone. Funny, that a cold dish gives a warm feeling.
Sure, I was exaggerating (and not really writing all that well), but the idea was to make the dish sound appealing and increase the Net Global Yummy on this planet.

Juliette:
So then we switched. Sorry there's not so much documentation of either me or Supine eating the avocado on toast (although there's lot of photos in the middle of me making it), but we took video of my experience of the ice cream and I'm fairly expressive about it, so go watch that:

Although SOMEONE kept interrupting me.

Well, every picture of me eating looks distressed, whatever my emotion, so the pictures don't really tell the story. main_1mspoon102020.jpgmain_1mitchelldistre102022.jpg
Cookies and Cream ice cream is mainly sugar and dairy (in that order) so it's going to appeal to the good old human evolutionary programming to like sugar and fat. I ate it as one would eat any ice cream: with primal, simple pleasure. I did not indeed notice the grittiness that Juliette mentioned at all. I found the larger cookie bits pleasantly starchy, and welcome, as the ice cream was a bit too sweet.

Juliette:
So... it's not the worst thing in the world. My texture concerns are still unaddressed, but I do kinda-almost-sorta like the flavor of the ice cream, although (as I said in the video) the brand we had was way too sweet. The large cookie pieces were okay, although starchy and kinda bland, while the small ones were not satisfying in either flavor or texture. I'm pretty hungry right now, so I wouldn't say no to a bowl of cookies-and-cream ice cream, but I don't think it'll ever be my top choice.

Supine:
I think that this experience with avocado may have set me back more than helped me overcome my dislike. I've been exposing myself to slowly increasing quantities in order to convince myself that I like avocado. Faced with so much at once, I was reminded that I don't like avocado, and in fact, I couldn't even finish the half piece of toast. I will say that Juliette is very right about the texture of avocado. It's very nice, but without a taste I like, it's a little like icing on a cake made out of dirt.
I think I've also been a little turned away from Cookies and Cream ice cream. The container that Juliette and I got for this task sat in my freezer for most of the 3 weeks between the accomplishment of this task and its posting. Odd that a task intended to expand my food circle ended up contracting it. Ah well. Someday I will like avocado! Or at least pretend to more convincingly.

Hearing the nice things helps me to yummy more (I already like both those thing, (except for overripe avocados, which taste like bacon and make me wanna hork)!

Juliette, have you ever enjoyed ice cream and cake? Does it help to think of cncic that way?
Also, avocado is technically considered a nut, which seems weird to me...

Not really, no. I have the same problem with it. I'm trying to push my boundaries on my texture issues (as that is what they can sometimes be), and just today I tried eating a brownie with ice cream and it tasted great, but the texture and mouthfeel were still icky.

Really, is it? I was pretty sure it's considered a fruit. Wikipedia tells me it's a 'drupe', which is another word for stonefruit.
